I would like to commend Dena-kay Martin for a well-written, much needed opinion piece ("A showy, selfish nation," Jan. 24). I especially appreciated the irony - what you called "karmic justice" - you point out in the final paragraph.
Mr. Bush has been grandstanding about the generosity of "the American people" and the fact is, while the people may indeed be generous, his government, and all the corporate forces that push it around for their own greedy-minded interests, is as tight-fisted and begrudging as they come. It is an insult to the American people to see their president stand up in their "defense" while refusing to follow the example of generosity he rhetorically champions.
Keep up the good work!
