Amherst PD investigates Hopkins-Klein area rape

The Amherst Police Department is investigating a reported sexual assualt involving a 17-year-old female who was jogging along Hopkins Road late Tuesday evening.

???The victim told Amherst Police she was jogging along Hopkins Road near Klein Road and the Clearfield Library when she was hit from behind, forced to an area, and sexually assaulted. The incident occurred at 10 p.m.

???"It was an opportunistic type of crime," said Amherst Assistant Police Chief Timothy Green. "It's 10 o'clock in the winter time and there is not a lot of traffic out."

??? The suspect has been described as a white male, standing about 5-feet-9-inches tall, wearing blue jeans, a dark puffy jacket with two lighter-colored stripes on the side and a dark-colored ski mask.

???Amherst Police recommend being cautious when walking or jogging in sparse areas.

???"We've been through so much with the bike path [incidents]," Green said. "If you're out jogging in a desolate area you should not go alone."

???Green warns students that are planning on jogging should take a partner and be alert.

???Anyone that may have any information regarding this incident should call the detectives at the Amherst Police at 689-1333.
