Akron-Bound Bulls to Zag the Zips

The UB Softball team will pack up their weathered mitts and head west in search of sunnier skies and - hopefully - some softball.

After two consecutive postponements, Buffalo (10-14 overall, 1-2 Mid-American Conference) isn't looking for anything special when they face the Akron Zips (13-14, 1-5 MAC) this weekend. The team just wants to get back into its rhythm by playing more games.

The Bulls have had their last five games cancelled, and haven't seen any game action in the last 12 days. Due to the recent inclement weather, UB lost its home opening series with Kent State last weekend. To make matters worse, the Bulls have had to fight mother nature for practice time outdoors on the softball diamond.

For some players, this is their last chance to make a statement in their college careers. In particular, seniors Breanne Nasti, Dominique Jones, Allison Round and Marce Ross, are making the most out of their final seasons at UB.

"Bre is very relaxed and knows that she's supposed to have fun during her senior year. Allison has been playing great," said Curran.

Nasti has had more than just fun, leading the Bulls in almost every offensive category with a .375 batting average, four homeruns, five doubles, and 17 RBIs.

Jones and Ross also add veteran experience to the Bulls.

"Marce Ross is stepping up big time. Dominique Jones has never played third base for us. We are just amazed at how well she is playing," Curran added. "She is definitely the bright spot from what has happened this year."

The focus of the team this year hasn't just been the senior leadership. Buffalo's role players, freshmen shortstop Mary Russell along with pitcher Sophie Barstad have seen significant playing time already. The two freshmen have done more than just play; they've been playing well. Russell is batting .273, and Barstad has notched six wins on the mound this season.

Buffalo opens the three-game series at Akron's Firestone Stadium on Friday at 3 p.m. Saturday's doubleheader will start at 1 pm.
