Goldhaber Decides to Retire After Scandal

Gerald Goldhaber will retire from his position as an associate professor in the communication department following his arrest with two students on drug charges earlier in the year.

Goldhaber, 60, will retire effective Aug. 12, according to The Buffalo News, ending a 29-year career at UB.

The university had been considering disciplinary actions against Goldhaber since his arrest Jan. 8 and issued a statement Wednesday on Goldhaber's retirement.

"As a leading institution of higher education, the University at Buffalo remains committed to certain overriding principles - that it must and will provide a safe environment for its students; and that all of its faculty and staff will conduct themselves in a professional manner," the statement read, according to The Buffalo News.

Goldhaber did not return calls for comment from The Spectrum Thursday.

Following his arrest, Goldhaber told The Spectrum he intended to return to UB by next fall at the latest.

"I have gratitude that the students have such faith in me, and I hope to regain that faith and for them to be comfortable in taking my classes in the future," Goldhaber said at the time.

Since the arrest, Chairman of the Communication Department George Barnett has been teaching Goldhaber's Political Communications class.

Goldhaber also owns a private research and political polling company, Goldhaber Research Associates. According to The Buffalo News, Goldhaber will continue to run the business.

Goldhaber was arrested in his Cayman Islands condominium Jan. 8 along with two UB students, Jose A. Sierra and Bernardo N. Tagliareni, and pled guilty to possession of marijuana and ecstasy along with consumption of marijuana.
