The independent student publication of The University at Buffalo, since 1950

Kiera Medved

Asst. Arts Editor

"Who am I"? That's probably one of the most difficult questions to answer. I find myself being several things: a student, an artist, avid Netflix watcher, etc.

But recently, I have enjoyed my new title: writer.

For years, I have enjoyed writing poetry and short stories but rarely showed anyone my work. It was always something I did on the side, when the creative juices flowed. I would have never been so bold as to call myself a legitimate writer.

In fall 2012, I ventured off by myself to study filmmaking in England. It wasn't until I received attention through my daily travel blog that I realized I had the potential to be a writer.

Writing for a newspaper always seemed like a challenging but rewarding opportunity.

I was absolutely ecstatic to have the chance to write for the University at Buffalo's student-run paper; and as an artist and theatrical designer, writing for the arts desk was a great fit for me.

Although I started off feeling insecure about my writing abilities, I realized how important it was to use my passion for art in all of my writing.

I don't want to write about things I wouldn't want to read about, so it only makes sense that I look at each article I write from the readers' perspective.

I try to ask questions like: Why would you read this? Why would you like this?

What can I do to make arts desk stand out? Standing out is my primary goal in all of my writing.

Moving into my senior year of college, I look forward to sharing what Buffalo has to offer in art, film and music. You can't throw a stick without hitting a new art exhibit or a fantastic concert venue in Buffalo. This city has a lot to entertain you with, and I'm excited to share it with you.

Here's to an awesome 2013-14 academic year!
