Get caught up: Fall sports recap

See what's been happening early this fall for UB's soccer and volleyball teams

Men's Soccer

The men's soccer team opened its season last Friday against rival Canisius (0-0-1). After losing at home against Canisius last season, the Bulls (0-0-1) looks to take reign of the rivalry. They were able to pull out a tie against the Golden Griffins, after evening the score in the 31st minute.

"We have some holes we have to fix but we played OK for the first game of the season," said head coach David Hesch. "Obviously I want to get a win, but a 1-1 tie isn't the end of world."

Hesch thought his team could have executed its chances on goal and defend better as a team. However, he did like how well the team possessed the ball and how senior goalkeeper Jonathan Viscosi played in net, keeping the Bulls in the game for all 90 minutes.

After defeating St. Bonaventure (0-2), 2-1, Tuesday night, the Bulls will host Binghamton University on Friday at 7 p.m.

Women's Soccer

The women's soccer team started its season earlier than any other team on campus. The Bulls started their season at home against Colgate (2-2) and Canisius (0-3), splitting the pair with a win over the Golden Griffins.

The Bulls (1-2-1) traveled to St. Bonaventure (0-3-1) this weekend and played the Bonnies to a 1-1 tie. They continued their road trip this week, losing to Youngstown State (3-0-0) on Tuesday night. A game at Bucknell (1-2-0) on Friday will wrap up the road trip. Buffalo will return home to host Niagara (0-1-0) on Sunday at 7 p.m.

Volleyball

The volleyball team was the youngest in the country last season, and its youth showed. The Bulls matured this offseason and return this year with some necessary experience.

The Bulls (2-1) began their season last weekend at the UB Invitational, taking on Canisius (1-2), San Jose State (1-2) and Oral Roberts (2-1). They were able to pull out a UB Invitational Championship by defeating Canisius and Oral Roberts, 3-1, 3-2.

"We had the opportunity to take a look at a number of people in different spots," said head coach Todd Kress. "We had a couple kids out with injuries and still we were able to get a number of people in there and come up with a tournament championship."

Kress' squad was able to polish off some of its raw talent displayed last season.

"I think it was just a cleaner version of what we were last year. It wasn't anything huge and fantastic, but it was just clean volleyball. We cut down on errors in all aspects. We gave ourselves the opportunity to win at the end and fortunately we took advantage of it."

The Bulls will travel to South Bend, Ind. for the Shamrock Invitational this weekend. Buffalo plays Eastern Kentucky (2-1) in the first game of the tournament on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
