This semester has seen several new additions, innovations and renovations to Campus Dining & Shops (CD&S) establishments. These changes and the effects they have had on the campus were the main topics discussed during Wednesday's Faculty Senate Executive Committee (FSEC) meeting.
???The enhancements that were made in 2008 are paying off in 2009, according to FSEC members.
???At the beginning of the school year, CD&S set out on a mission to create and provide outstanding services that enhance the learning landscape and social atmosphere of UB.
???One major CD&S investment is IncrediBull Pizza. Students and staff are now able to order anything from the IncrediBull menu from anywhere on campus. IncrediBull also offers Web-based ordering, meaning people can order, pay, and expect a free delivery right from their room.
???This change has been a major success, averaging $1,500 a night between the hours of 5 p.m. to 1 a.m.
???New additions in the Student Union included 150 new seats and tables in the foyer, along with a new Tim Hortons and Jump Asian. At first, investors were a little apprehensive of bringing the two restaurants to the Union, according to FSEC members. The concern was that it would take away business from other Student Union vendors.
???This was a misconception, according to Jeff Brady, executive director of CD&S.
???"It's been well received by everybody. We're dealing with a brand new generation and that's what they live by. It's a good problem to have when the Student Union sales have increased by 8 percent because of these additions."
??? Tim Hortons beverages are also available in the Baldy walkway, where they have increased sales by 22 percent.
???CD&S has also benefitted from the success of the UB football program. UB typically earns $26,000 to $28,000 in concessions, but with the team's rise in popularity, on average they earn anywhere from $50,000 to $65,000. With the increased revenues, the school has been able to invest in a new fence decorated with UB's colors, a new freezer and cooler for the games, and two new golf carts for transporting food and beverages.
???Another CD&S accomplishment this semester was the trayless plan. CD&S was able to reduce food waste in the dining halls from 7.2 ounces per person to 3.6 ounces.
???In this chaotic economy, CD&S stressed that its implementations have proven to be a success at UB.
