February's Book of the Month:

A Thousand Splendid Suns

Khaled Hosseini's recent UB visit inspired hundreds to pick up The Kite Runner. From the same author, The Spectrum recommends A Thousand Splendid Suns, Hosseini's second novel.

Kick back and spend your Valentine's Day with this sharp story about the women of Afghanistan. Their plight, as exemplified by Hosseini, is at times raw and striking, not unlike his earlier work. It's the fictional story of a mother-daughter relationship in the time of the Taliban.

Hosseini describes his homeland of Afghanistan in a beautiful way that parallels that of The Kite Runner. Debunking many of the myths about the Middle East and Islam in both of his works, Hosseini offers realistic first-hand descriptions and accounts of events as told by fictional narrators.

About the Author: Khaled Hosseini was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, and moved to the United States in 1980. He graduated from the University of California - San Diego School of Medicine in 1993.

The Spectrum Book Club will be meeting at 9 p.m. on Tuesdays in 132 Student Union. Interested students should e-mail the publication's Editor in Chief Stephanie Sciandra at srs33@buffalo.edu for more information.
