UB should provide all students with swipe access to campus buildings containing dining halls or other food services. A resident of Ellicott, for example, should be able to get into Goodyear Hall after 5 p.m. in order to eat dinner. Similarly, South Campus residents with late classes on North should have entry into the dining halls in Ellicott and Governors.
To claim that greater card access is a security concern is absurd. First, swipe access enables UB to determine which students went where at what times. Second, unauthorized access to the dorms for students is easy enough; just knock on a window to get in. So why bother changing card access at all? First, it relieves students of the task of letting hungry strangers into their dorms. Second, no student should have to stand outside in the cold, face pressed against the glass, hoping to get a bite to eat when no one is around to open the door.
