This Week's Theme: Simple But Deep

"Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... And Spring" (2004)

Despite the wordy title, this Buddhist tale speaks with its heart more than its mouth. A wise monk and a young boy in training live on a floating temple in the middle of a beautiful Korean lake. The boy acquires a curse while young and mischievous and returns to the lake at different times in his life to find enlightenment. The story is uplifting and the cinematography beautiful.

"The Straight Story" (1999)

This David Lynch film recounts the true story of Alvin Straight, a 73-year-old who drove his John Deere lawnmower from Laurens, Iowa, to Mt. Zion, Wis., in 1994. Though his eyesight is fading, Alvin stops every night to ponder the stars and the places his life has taken him, conjuring up profound meaning in the quiet countryside.
