Volleyball Takes Two of Three

Bulls Beat Binghamton and Stony Brook at WNY Tournament


After a season-opening loss at Syracuse, the Bulls came back strong, winning two of three at the Western New York Tournament at Niagara University.


Day one


The Blue and White swept Binghamton 3-0, showing the rest of the teams and the spectators that quitting was not in the game plan.

Buffalo won the match by game scores of 30-26, 30-25, and 31-29, leaving the Bulls 1-1 on the season.

Junior Katie Weekley led the stampede with 12 kills and four blocks. Freshman Tammy Jul?(c) added 11 kills, three service aces and two blocks.

Senior Molly Schrantz rounded out the action, recording nine kills and 11 digs. Sophomore Nikki Morzenti chimed in with nine kills, eight digs and three service aces. Junior setter Amy Brown had 37 assists in the game.


Day two


UB was swept by Texas-Arlington in three games by scores of 30-23, 30-15, and 30-22. Despite the loss, the Bulls had strong showings from Jul?(c), who lit up the court with a match-high 14 kills. Also contributing were Weekley with 11 kills and two blocks, Morzenti with nine kills and seven digs, and Brown with 35 assists, six digs and three blocks.

Buffalo concluded the doubleheader with a 3-1 victory over Stony Brook. The Bulls dealt Stony Brook (2-1) their first loss of the season in a tight match by game scores of 30-24, 28-30, 30-28 and 30-25.

Nikki Morzenti led the Bulls with 21 kills-- just one shy of her career high, 10 digs and 3 blocks. Morzenti had a great first three games of the four game invitational registering 39 kills. Katie Weekley had 12 kills in the victory and has also had a great first three games of the invitational with 35 kills and 12 blocks.

Jul?(c), formerly of the Canadian Junior National Team, has added a strong offensive presence to the team this year. Jul?(c) had 15 kills and 5 blocks in Saturday's win, and leads the Bulls this year with 46 kills.

Sophomore Lauren Burd had 6 kills and 6 blocks in the victory over Stony Brook while freshman Lizaiha Garcia had a team-high 16 digs and Amy Brown finished with 49 assists, six kills, and six digs.

The Bulls next play against Canisius on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the newly renovated Alumni Arena.
