What's with the comment about students being receptive to the comprehensive fee increase ("Comprehensive Fee Hiked," Sept. 3)? Last year, we had an increase of $1000 between tuition and comprehensive fee increases. Why doesn't UB do a survey of student opinion on the comprehensive fee increase?
I read recently in the People's Weekly that even if the minimum wage was increased to $7 per hour, which is what Kerry is proposing by 2007, our dollar would still only have the buying power of the 1960s, factoring in the cost-of-living increase. How about all of us making national efforts to increase the minimum wage to $10 per hour?
I am a non-traditional student and I feel that I am paying $800 per semester to fight for a parking spot on a daily basis! This is no deal.
Okay, I also get UB Internet for free -- but wait a minute, it's not free. I am paying between $200 and $300 per semester for computing services. I could get Juno, NetZero, or Peoples for $10 per month, which means I could get Internet service for $40 per semester.
As far as the parking goes, I can park downtown in Buffalo for $2.25. per day, which would equal $11.25 per week or at a discount rate $30 per month. This gives me a total of $120 per semester for parking.
According to my calculations, I am getting about $160 worth of services per semester at UB. Dennis Black, could you arrange for a refund of $640 per semester for me and my children?
It's too hot to pull the wool over our eyes this early in the semester!
