The University at Buffalo opened the 2003 spring portion of the crew season with some strong racing at a tri-meet against Marist and host Ithaca on the Cayuga Inlet.
The Bulls' varsity eight boat took first in the 2,000-meter sprint course with a time of 7:20.4. UB's second varsity eight boat also had a first place finish with a time of 7:15.1. It was the first time in four years that two varsity eight boats had first place finishes.
Both of the Bulls' novice eight crews finished second in their races. The A squad turned in a time of 7:24.0, while the B squad turned in a time of 7:50.5.
The teams are back in action next Saturday at RIT. The quad-meet will also include Binghamton and Rochester.
UB posted some strong result in the Raleigh Relays this past weekend in a meet that featured over 3,000 athletes representing 100 teams.
Joe Clark had an impressive showing in the 400-meter dash, turning in a second place time of 47.56. There were 167 other finishers in the race.
Junior Faith Thompson broke her own record in the shot put this week. Thompson qualified for NCAA regional competition with a toss 46-7.25 (14.20m) to finish seven out of 32 competitors. She also finished 14th in the hammer throw with a distance of 159-1 (48.50m).
UB's women also set a relay record as the 800-meter relay team turned in a 1:40.47 showing to finish 12th of 29 teams.
Christina Keck scored a fourth-place finish in the 800-meters with a 2:10.86 showing. Byron McKinney also finished fourth in the men's shot put at 55-1.50 (16.80m) and Keith Gentes took fifth in the hammer throw at 177-1 (53.99m).
Laura Olson tied for seventh in the pole vault at 12-0 (3.66m). Jessica Moldovan placed eighth in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase at 11:53.75. Rick Stewart took 12th in the men's race in 9:25.59. Onile White was 11th in the unseeded portion of the 1500-meter run. Biaunca McFarland finished 18th in the 400-meter dash in 56.35.
