Women in Sports Day
United States Olympian and Ellicottville, N.Y. native Jillian Vogtli will be the keynote speaker at the University at Buffalo's 13th Annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day Celebration.
The event will take place at UB's Alumni Arena on Wednesday, Feb. 5th from 8 -9:30 a.m. It will also feature UB student-athlete speakers, a video presentation, and the Buffalo Athletic Department will honor an individual within the Western New York community who has aided in the advancement of women's sports with its annual Recognition Award.
The event is free and open to the public, however, reservations should be made through the UB Ticket Office by calling 716-645-6666. Groups are welcome.
Vogtli, a member of the U.S. Freestyle Ski Team since 1996, has twice been on the U.S. World Championship team and competed for the American team at the Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City last winter. She has ranked as high as 11th in the world, after the 2000 season, and was ranked fourth among U.S. freestyle skiers after last season. The Western New York native has also competed in the Goodwill Games and placed as high as third in a World Cup event held at Lake Placid last year.
Women's Track and Field head coach Vicki Mitchell has made the announcement of the signing of two athletes to join the UB squad for the 2003-04 school year.
Tara Phouthavongsa from Brockport, N.Y. and Jessica Lister of Rodman, N.Y. are the two girls who will be suiting up for the Bulls. Phouthavongsa is a jumper who will most likely be made into a multi-event athlete. Lister is a pole-vaulter who will be doing that primarily at UB.
