Uday P. Sukhatme has been named dean for the College of Arts and Sciences, a position which has been filled by Charles L. Stinger since Kerry S. Grant was promoted to vice provost for student affairs and dean of the Graduate School in March 2001.
Sukhatme has been serving as interim vice provost for academic programs at the University of Illinois at Chicago and will begin his position at UB in August.
Sukhatme, a graduate of University of Delhi, India, earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics before going on to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for his bachelor's and doctoral degrees in physics.
William Baumer, professor of philosophy, discussed Sukhatme's extensive qualifications, at a Faculty Senate Executive Committee meeting on Wednesday. Sukhatme's resume is both "lengthy and impressive," Baumer said. He was confident that Sukhatme will be a good administrator.
The College of Arts and Sciences encompasses 31 departments and Sukhatme will oversee 11,000 students and 1,700 graduate students.
