Comprehensive Fee Hike

Letter To The Editor

To The Editor:

I refer to Stephanie Alaimo's article "Fees on the Rise," [Editor's Note: The article is titled "Comprehensive Fee Hike Increases Cost of Attending UB"] from Feb. 27.

Two student leaders couldn't be more different. On the yet-again-risen UB All Fee, SA President Chris Oliver said, "We have to make sure that a public university is always affordable. I'm not sure that will be the case in the future."

Meanwhile, piercing intellect Eric Reich, student representative to the UB Council, UB's tribe of bodhisattvas or the spiritually mature, said, "There are some students whose parents pay for school and they could care less if [the fee] goes up and there are some students in school that $30 means driving on bald tires. But even the person with the bald tires would rather pay the $30 than not be able to get a computer or use their e-mail, or when they're sick, not be able to see a doctor."

I couldn't have summed up student representative Reich's philosophy better. His insensitivity and acquiescence is expensive for students.
