By SIMONE BATTISTE-ALLEYNE | Oct. 12, 2007The 15-minute rule that allows students to leave class without academic penalty after waiting for a missing-in-action professor may soon become obsolete.The Student Wellness Center has developed a program called "Don't Cancel That Class" as an alternative to class cancellations.The service is new this semester and was made possible by a three-year government suicide-prevention grant.
UB study reveals that deal-finders don't hurt supermarkets
By SIMONE BATTISTE-ALLEYNE | Sep. 28, 2007Consumers who partake in the art of "cherry picking," or only buying items that are on sale, are not as dangerous to retailers as previously thought.According to a recent study by associate professor of marketing, Debabrata Talukdar, though shoppers get a large percentage of discounts, it does not take a master cherry picker to find deals at the market."People who are extreme cherry pickers only get about 75 percent of the total discounts, but we also found that people who weren't actively seeking sales got about 50 percent of discounts," Talukdar said.According to Talukdar, people who contribute negatively to a store's profit are considered cherry pickers.

By SIMONE BATTISTE-ALLEYNE | Sep. 24, 2007The Department of Physiology and Biophysics hosted a lecture on Parkinson's disease by Professor Benjamin Wolozin, M.D., Ph.D., of Boston University this past Thursday at Farber Hall.According to Wolozin, Parkinson's disease is a degenerative neurological disease caused by a certain genetic combination.
