Research funding up from new sources

Despite decreasing availability of resources from the university's main benefactor, the National Institute of Health (NIH), research funding has increased 11.5 percent during the fiscal year of 2006.

"Violent crime up, cops down in Queen City"

According to a study from the UB Regional Institute, violent crime is high in Buffalo, and police officer levels are low.The recent policy brief, "Violent Crime in the City of Good Neighbors," described the Institute's finding - that Buffalo is one of the only cities found to have both a higher violent crime rate and fewer police officers than the group average.

Al Gore to provide two consecutive lectures

Due to popular demand, former Vice President Al Gore will address UB students and a select public audience twice when he comes to speak in late April.In conjunction with the Distinguished Speaker Series, Gore, the 45th vice president of the United States and renowned author of the best-selling book "Earth in the Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit" will discuss current global warming trends in two separate lectures.

Historic French documents linked to modern propaganda

The Humanities Institute's fellowship lecture and seminar called "Trauma, Time, and Writing: How Historical Narrative Radicalized Huguenot Resistance Theory," presented assistant professor Amy Graves' theory linking methods used to record early-modern history to modern-day propaganda in journalism in the Center for the Arts screening room this past Monday.The talk featured Graves, a member of the department of romance languages and literatures, and her recent research on the subject."My project seeks to capture the spirit of a history that sticks close to public tastes and circles of politico-religious activism during the French Wars of Religion (1562-1598).
