Apartment complex still bittersweet

It's been three months since students moved into the brand new University Village at Sweethome, and many are still voicing complaints of poor Internet connections, vandalism and overall sub-par construction.The apartment complex, which has been heavily advertised as an oasis of sorts, is complete with tanning beds and a movie theater.

Making lemon-AIDS

While their efforts weren't as cheeky as fashion designer Kenneth Cole's "We all have AIDS" t-shirt campaign, UB groups tried to engage the college as best they could on Wednesday's World AIDS Day.The AIDS Coalition, a division of Sub-Board I, did what it could to bring the UB community together for World AIDS Day in the Student Union.

"Turkey or not, they're ready to trot"

For 110 years now, Buffalonians looking for a little exercise before the big Thanksgiving meal have hit the streets to run the Turley Trot, a quirky road race that has become a local tradition as much as the turkey itself on the table.Over a century old and still kickin', the starting gun for the annual Turkey Trot 8K race will fire at 9 a.m.

Solidarity week closes on high note

On Monday they filled the Student Union, chanting, "U-N-I-T-Y," "P-O-W-E-R" and "P-R-I-D-E." They marched from the Union to Capen Hall and back to spend the rest of the day with performances by the gospel choir, the step troupe and a series of other activities that started Black Solidarity Week with a passionate show of student voice."It was one of the largest turnouts in the past three years," said Tricia Grannum, Black Student Union president and a senior communication major.

Longtime dean of engineering Karwan to step down

After a 30-year relationship with UB as a faculty administrator and dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Mark Karwan announced he is stepping down from his position."His long term as dean is the result of his terrific leadership and strong support both from within SEAS and from the higher administration," said D.

Defining what qualifies as a campus holiday

Students at UB got a brief break last week when classes were cancelled for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, but while many enjoyed the time off, others questioned why classes are cancelled for certain religious holidays and not for federal holidays, like Columbus Day.Or for that matter, why UB doesn't halt classes for many other religious holidays, such as Good Friday in the spring semester.John Wu, a senior international social studies major, said he's not happy with which holidays UB decides to acknowledge."It's messed up that UB only caters to Jewish and Christian holidays, while ignoring other ethnic holidays like the Chinese New Year on Feb.

"WBFO receives $70,000 grant to go digital, expand reach"

WBFO 88.7, a UB-funded public radio station, has received a $70,000 grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to pay for resources to allow WBFO to switch from traditional analog service to digital broadcasts.WBFO, Western New York's only FM National Public Radio station, will be using the money to buy the necessary equipment to make the conversion to digital in its studios in Allen Hall on South Campus."Digital is the future of broadcasting, and the future is here," said Patricia Harrison, CPB president and CEO of WBFO.

Two students find niche in hurricane relief

In the midst of nationwide and university-wide fundraisers to aid those affected in Hurricane Katrina's wave of devastation, two UB students have found a unique way to show their support.During September's tax-free week, Susan Goon and Jennifer Chen did what many New Yorkers did - they stocked up on tax-free clothing.

SA budget sees impact of increase

SA officials say the undergraduate student government is finally seeing the fruits this semester of the $500,000 budget hike voted on last fall and approved in the spring.Since the mandatory activity fee was increased last year, it has been a point of contention among students.
