"On Earth Day, UB Shows Love For Planet"

While students across campus stopped to celebrate 4/20 on Tuesday, not nearly as many could say they made plans for Earth Day on 4/22.This is exactly why Jim Simon thought this year was time to do something different and turn some heads for Mother Earth.The president of the UB Environmental Network, Simon and his club teamed up with the UB Green Office, the Office of Student Affairs, the Geology Club and the Outdoor Adventure Club Thursday afternoon in order to increase awareness of the earth's needs and celebrate Earth Day outside the Student Union."This is the first time we have ever done something of this nature," said Simon, a junior environmental studies and sociology major.

"Officials Taking Elections, Evaluations Online"

Already dubbed one of the most wired campuses in the country, UB has taken further steps this year to leave pens and paper in the dust.Advances in technology at UB this year are putting several processes that were once done manually - like class evaluations and student elections - online.UB officials said the switch to conducting certain things online will not only allow students easier access, but will also make it easier for administrators and organizers to run the elections and evaluations more smoothly.Jennifer Wantz, student activities associate and student government liaison for Student Life, which held the UB Council election online for the first time this year, said online operations are generally the cheapest route."The cost factor was a big part of our decision to do elections this way," said Wantz.

UB Alumni Named Among Top U.S. Black Lawyers

Four UB alumni have been named by Black Enterprise Magazine as some of the top 100 black lawyers in the country.Michael Battle, Brent Wilson, Michael Banks, and Vincent Dunn all received awards.Carolyn Brown, editor at large of Black Enterprise, said a majority of the lawyers selected are partners in the nation's top law firms.

"Senior Citizen Ball a Hit With Participants, Organizers, and Community"

When it came to glitz and glamour, Saturday's Senior Citizen Ball in Harriman Hall may not exactly have measured up to the high school prom.But when it came to fun for 40 seniors long past their senior years in high school, Saturday's ball was the best show in town.With food, music, dancing and entertainment for all ages, the Phi Eta Sigma honor society held its third-annual Senior Citizen Ball this weekend.

The Defense Never Rests

The verdict is in: the UB Mock Trial team is on a roll.The club placed in the top seven last weekend at the Mid-Eastern Regional Tournament in Indiana, Pa., earning a berth in the National Tournament in Richmond, Ky.For the club's members, like junior sociology and legal studies major Dan Nickolai, mock trial is combines the drama of "Law and Order" with the intensity of varsity sports."People that want to join the club are usually just people who want to go to law school," said Nickolai.

This semester, Deborah Silverman's advanced public relations class is heading a project for the New York Alliance for Donation, and if successful, the team could make a difference in the lives of more than 300 Western New Yorkers in need of organ transplants.The U.S.
