Capaldi Delivers State of the University Address

An increase in the amount of funding and research opportunities UB has received in the last year is part of the reason Provost Elizabeth Capaldi feels the university is in "terrific" shape, she said during her State of the University Address at Tuesday's meeting of the Faculty Senate.According to Capaldi, the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, School of Architecture and Planning, the School of Computer Science and Engineering and various other departments have received substantial grants this semester, and an additional $50 million to $60 million in new grants is anticipated for January.The amount of money donated to the university is a good measure of the institution's success and quality of research, said Capaldi.

After years of writing for newspapers that he felt stifled his creativity and freedom of expression, UB Distinguished Professor of English Bruce Jackson found his outlet by creating the Buffalo Report, an free online publication rapidly gaining notice for its cutting political commentaries.Jackson started the Buffalo Report, available at http://www.buffaloreport.com, in May of 2002.

UB Freshmen Class Sees Increase

UB's population is getting bigger and better, according to statistics on the freshman class of 2002 compiled by UB's Office of Institutional Analysis.Last year, the amount of applications received by UB was the highest in 13 years, and this year's freshmen have the highest SAT scores in the university's history, said Sean Sullivan, vice provost for academic information and planning."We received a total of 16,065 freshman applications and have experienced, on average, a 2.5 percent compounded growth in applications over the past three years," said Sullivan.According to Sullivan, this year's average freshman SAT is approximately 1160, four points higher than last year.
