Paved Paradise: Hallwalls Predicts the Future

The tall white walls and paint-splattered cement floors of the Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center are festooned with interpretations and glimpses of the future for its 2004 Members Exhibition, entitled "The World of Tomorrow...Today!"While the future of mankind may be difficult to foresee, the fate of Hallwalls has already been decided.

Mid-American Conference Basketball

While the East Division Mid-American Conference standings look almost identical to last year's final standings, the West Division seems to have been flipped completely upside down.The usual suspects are once again atop the East standings with Kent State and Miami trouncing opponents, and, of course, the cellar dwelling regulars like Ohio and UB are reprising their roles at the bottom while providing little to no excitement for their fans.But it's a whole different story in the West.

Coping with the Cold

Those who visited Montana last week with Jennifer Pugh and the rest of the Schussmeisters Ski Club are nonchalant about the weather in Buffalo."It was 32 degrees below zero there, so coming back to Buffalo was easy," said the senior chemistry and biomedical pharmacology major.For most who stayed in Buffalo, the recent weather conditions might evoke entirely different sentiments.With old man winter blowing full force into Western New York this week, many students have been caught off guard by the sudden shift in climate and are consequently ill prepared to cope with its impact.Dr. Frank Carnevale, director of Student Health Services at UB, said students must take precautions when confronting Mother Nature.

A lot of things changed in Buffalo during winter break. The sobering reality of winter in Buffalo has finally hit, UB has a new president and the women's basketball team has made a few surprising changes to its roster.One of the few things unchanged is the Bulls' Mid-American Conference standing.

Buying books, last minute registration and battling snowstorms are some of the things that might be on the mind of the average UB student upon returning for a new semester of classes - the thought of blood donation most likely is not.According to the American Red Cross, young people should be consistently jotting blood donation onto their to-do lists."There is a definite need for younger blood donors," said Andrea Holland, a communication specialist for the American Red Cross.

Hollie Cook Suspended Indefinitely

Hollie Cook, a sophomore guard and fan favorite for the Buffalo Bulls women's basketball team, will not be seen on court again this semester - or possibly ever again - after being suspended indefinitely by head coach Cheryl Dozier."There was a lack of focus on the academic side of things," said Dozier.
