Randolph Channels the Rock Spirits
By BRIAN WEINSTEIN | Feb. 23, 2004At its best, attending a musical performance can be akin to a religious experience.Robert Randolph and the Family Band understand that philosophy and made it their credo Friday night at The Sphere Entertainment Complex.Playing nearly three hours of energetic, adrenaline-pumping gospel-influenced blues to the packed venue, the band won over many audience-goers who were initially less enthusiastic to Randolph's performance. The lights dimmed for the group at 9:45 p.m., and they took the stage to an audience who had spent the previous 45 minutes clapping, chanting and screaming for Randolph.

Bulls Move into Fifth Place in MAC
By DANIEL GVERTZ | Feb. 20, 2004There's one thing to be said about the Buffalo Bulls' basketball season after Wednesday night's comeback throttling of the Eastern Michigan Eagles. It is on.Behind a monster 24-point, eight-rebound, four-steal, three-assist performance from Turner Battle, UB (11-11, 7-7 Mid-American Conference) defeated the Eastern Michigan Eagles (10-12, 5-9 MAC) at the Convocation Center in convincing fashion, 83-64.With the victory, UB moves into sole possession of fifth place in the MAC, and if the season were to end today, Buffalo would host a first round home playoff game against the 12th place Northern Illinois Huskies (7-17, 2-12 MAC).Despite what the score conveys, the Bulls did not find their "A-game" until the end of the first half.

'Welcome To Mooseport' Fails to Live Up To Its Promise
By PAUL MEGNA | Feb. 20, 2004"Welcome To Mooseport" poses an unlikely question: if a popular ex-President campaigned to be the mayor of a small town against an honest, somewhat dimwitted plumber, who would win?
Big Expectations for Black Explosion
By TAMEKA BRODIE | Feb. 20, 2004Limousines will be making rounds on North and South campuses on Saturday evening, and though it might be easy to mistake them for movie stars, the fancily clad people entering these limo's will be none other than UB students on their way to Black Explosion.Cristo Benedit, a senior communication major and the president of Black Student Union, said those who plan on attending Black Explosion should look forward to an evening of fashion, good food, and music."People can expect to be greeted and seated, have a fabulous meal and a beautiful desert," he said kissing his fingers in the air making an appreciative sound. The Black Explosion, an event put on by the Black Student Union, celebration includes dinner - served at 6:30 p.m.

Rec Center Still On Hold
By JENNIFER FUSCO | Feb. 20, 2004A year and a half after thousands of UB students, staff and faculty members voiced their support for a multi-million dollar recreational center on North Campus, there is little word as to whether or it will become a reality. So what's UB waiting for?According to Vice President of Student Affairs Dennis Black, there are plenty of factors holding up the decision."If we are going to go through with the recreational center, we would have to improve Clark Hall and South Campus," Black said.
Strength Through Music
By ALEXIS FARNSWORTH | Feb. 20, 2004A lobby full of UB students were transported to a land of vibrant colors, mouth-watering foods, and cultural gurus in the Student Union Wednesday - all while traveling to the beat of the Darbuka drum.Instead of the usual hum of student voices and the occasional "cha-ching" of a cash register, the Student Union boomed with the sound of feet stomping to African music.Africa and its rich culture were squeezed into the Student Union lobby by the efforts of Student Multicultural Affairs and the Student Planning Committee. From noon to 2 p.m., the eighth annual African Bazaar offered students and faculty a sneak-peak of African culture with its "Sounds of Africa" theme.

Bayside Not By the Wayside
By PAUL MEGNA | Feb. 20, 2004As the melodic and emotionally driven style of rock and roll known as "emo" continues to gain popularity in the indie-rock scene as well as the mainstream, many young bands with such a style are enjoying increased public exposure.Among the most promising of these is Bayside, a talented, Long Island-based rock group whose first full length LP, "Sirens and Condolences," was recently released on Victory Records. When asked to describe Bayside's musical style, guitarist and backup vocalist Jack O'Shea was unwilling to characterize his group into any specific genre."Bayside's sound has a bunch of influences, punk, emo...but I'd rather just call our style rock than put it into any one category," said O'Shea.
