Orientation Will Offer More Options

In late June, thousands of high school students around the world will throw their mortarboards in the air, trade their locker pockets for dorm decorations and clear their schedules for UB's freshman orientation.UB's orientation process consists of several two-day orientations, running from July 8 to Aug.

"Pat Tillman, Pioneer and Cardinal, Dies in Afghanistan"

The American public was presented with two conflicting messages and symbols this weekend, as NFL player Pat Tillman was killed in action in Afghanistan and the nation saw the first pictures of deceased soldiers returning from Iraq.In the case of the anonymous flag-draped coffins, we heard from Bush administration officials that the images should be secret in order to respect the families.

Contestants Get Down and Dirty at Oozfest 2004

Coated in mud from head to toe, 128 teams battled each other in the 20th annual Oozfest mud volleyball tournament Saturday for a first-place trophy and a lot of fun at the mud pits near South Lake Village.The theme of this year's Oozfest - with its 21st anniversary next year - was "Almost Legal."The 128 co-ed teams of students, faculty, alumni and community members were allowed a maximum of eight players.The $120 it cost each team to participate included a playing fee, doughnuts for breakfast, subs for lunch, t-shirts and side events such as a three-legged race and root beer pong."There's always crazy stuff going on.

High School Students Outnumber UB Students at Springfest

Critics of this year's Spring Fest argued there was just something the SA event was lacking.Many said it was a big name band.Others said general interest.But after Spring Fest finally arrived Friday, at least one thing UB's Spring Fest lacked was obvious: UB students.While the line for non-UB students to buy Spring Fest tickets wrapped around Alumni Arena, the UB student line was almost non-existent.

Having a living replica of oneself might be an attractive prospect that some consider only possible through future medical wonders, but identical twins have been something of a marvel since humans have been producing offspring.For Lorianne and Christina Boscarino, life has always been shared with a person whose appearance is identical their own."It's kind of funny because when people first meet me, they are surprised to find out that I have a twin sister," said Lorianne, a freshman business major.

Hundreds of thousands of Americans turned out in Washington D.C. this weekend to voice their support for pro-choice practices and condemn the steps the Bush administration has taken to undermine a woman's right to choose.The Bush administration has proudly stood with the Vatican and various totalitarian theocracies, voicing their disdain for abortion practices.

Operation: Student Spending

Blink and you might miss it. But corporations are banking billions of dollars in marketing and advertising on the chance that you won't.The demographic encompassing 18 to 25-year-olds is the one most feverishly sought after by corporations worldwide, making most UB students - with pools of disposable income - their prime target."The marketing business has put a price on your head, to the tune of $300 billion a year - that's what experts believe that people your age collectively spend," stated Allan Casey, an author, in an article for www.adbusters.org.According to Christopher Mele, an associate professor in the Department of Sociology, corporations go after the student dollar by studying the students themselves."Corporations target youth markets by employing what journalists have called 'cool hunting' in order to predict the next trend in consumer markets, which change quickly and dramatically," he said.According to Mele, these cool hunters are experts paid to study people in schools, malls and clubs in cities and suburbs throughout America.

Thirteen Students Win Nancy Welch Award

Residence hall officials honored 13 students on Wednesday with Nancy Welch Awards for organizing campus events that increased UB's level of community - road trips, cultural events, haunted hallways and impromptu football games.The award was established in 1979 in memory of Welch, a residential coordinator who played a key role in creating a sense of community among students in the then-newly constructed Ellicott Complex.Claude Welch, a professor of political science who was married to Nancy Welch, posed a question to those in attendance."How do you develop a sense of community among 2,500 students?" Welch asked.
