Local Calls Now Free in Dorms

For students living on-campus, dialing locally has become easier and affordable this semester.Through a free local calling plan provided by AT&T, UB students can now dial just nine and then the number, rather than using an authorization code that charges for local calls.According to Marian Tetreault, senior staff associate for University Residence Halls, 32 percent of students didn't even use the university phone services at all last semester.

Absolutely Fabulous Art Damage

After listening to Fear Before the March of Flames's debut album, "Odd How People Shake," it became conceivable that an equally impressive sophomore effort could solidify the band's status near the top of the hardcore music scene.It has done so.Actually, call it "progressive hardcore." Much in the vein of Dillinger Escape Plan and Every Time I Die, Fear Before experiments with time signatures and eclectic riffs, the latter courtesy of guitarist Adam Fisher.

Sweatshop Group to Push for Worker Rights

UB Students Against Sweatshops started the semester Tuesday night with a crowd of new and anxious students hoping to build on the group's progress of last year, when it petitioned for UB to join various workers' rights organizations.This year's Students Against Sweatshops members plan to focus their efforts on the Worker's Rights Consortium, an international monitoring organization that focuses on keeping universities informed of the conditions in the factories where their apparel is manufactured."Our vision is to work with this organization and others to form solidarity in creating a sweatshop free campus," said Jessica Carrancio, a junior math and Spanish major.According to Students Against Sweatshops, the Worker's Rights Consortium generates codes of conduct between companies and universities that include paying legal minimum wages, the necessity of a labor union, and worker compensation.In 2002, 13 schools -- including Notre Dame, New York University and Ohio State -- dropped their contracts with New Era, citing the apparel company's manufacturing policies.

A Clean Sweep

The inaugural event in the newly-renovated Alumni Arena was a success for the University at Buffalo on Wednesday night as the UB women's volleyball team defeated Canisius in three straight games by scores of 30-22, 30-27 and 30-17.Senior team captain Molly Schrantz had a big game for the Bulls, leading UB's attack with 12 kills and a match-high 14 digs."I thought they played well, and I thought they stuck to the game plan," said UB head coach Sally Kus.

Men's Tennis Looks to Veterans

With a talented group of returning players, the University at Buffalo Men's tennis team will open the 2004-2005 season this weekend at the UB/St.Bonaventure Classic Tournament at the UB Tennis Center near the Ellicott Complex.Head coach Russ Crispell, currently in his 11th season as the Bulls' head coach, will look to veteran seniors Randy Rocchio and Nick Zieziula to lead the way for UB when they begin their final campaigns wearing blue and white.In 2004, Zieziula accumulated 24 wins in singles action-good enough to make him the all-time record holder in that category.

As the defending back-to-back men's singles, men's doubles and father-son doubles champion of the Muny Tennis Championships held in Buffalo every August, Nick Zieziula seems poised to lead UB's men's tennis team to victory this season.The senior co-captain has enjoyed a career at UB that has featured several awards.
