Students will have several parties with differing viewpoints to choose from during the Student Association Senate elections, which are set for next week.The elections, which will be held Monday Sept.

Health Center: Just What the Doctor Ordered

Students can expect the long-awaited health center on North Campus to open by the fall of 2005, which will expand on the services provided at the current South Campus center at Michael Hall, according to UB officials.Through the combined efforts of vice president of Student Affairs Dennis Black, director of student services at Michael Hall Frank Carnevale, and Student Association President Anthony Burgio, the administration and SA worked together to generate plans for the new health center."If it weren't for the cooperation for all those groups, this new service wouldn't be a reality," Carnevale said.The goal for the new center is to have 12 hours of medical service a day, Carnevale said."During the day you can be seen at Michael Hall, and at night you can visit the North Campus," Carnevale said.Carnevale added that rapid progress is being made on the North Campus location."Currently we're working on the architectural plans for the center, in the spring we'll begin construction, and hopefully we'll be open by the fall 2005 semester," he said.The new student health center will be located in Room 114 on the first floor of the Student Union.

Ben Folds Five New Jams

Everyone has had this exchange conversation at some point in their lives, albeit with different words filling in the blanks:"What would it sound like if (insert band here) covered (insert band here)?"On Ben Folds's latest EP, "Super D," he inserts his name and The Darkness' opening with his own version of the British glam-metal superstars' hit "Get Your Hands Off My Woman."It smokes.In the same way that the Darkness is a throwback to Thin Lizzy, Folds experiments with a throwback of his own on "Super D." "Kalamazoo" begins with Folds's typical knack for making the listener understand how important each word he says is before slipping in some straight disco-era strings and drums.

In the last few years, both Victory Records and Epitaph Records have done an especially good job at signing new, at least somewhat promising, bands and recording their debut records with the intention of smoothing out any original edges and punting them into the vast arena of generic music.From First To Last's Epitaph debut, "Dear Diary, My Teenage Angst Has A Bodycount," makes a valiant effort at defying the mold set forth for it.

Subway

Since its opening in August, the new Subway that replaced the Sub Shoppe in the Commons has been packed with hungry students, adding another national food chain that will compete with smaller eateries like the Campus Cafe for student business.Plans for the changeover began at the start of the last year when the Sub Shoppe was brought under new management and the wheels were set in motion to convert the eatery into a Subway franchise, according to Michael Lewkowicz, owner of the Subway in the Commons."It was always my plan to turn it into a Subway, and I probably should have turned it into a Subway sooner," Lewkowicz said.Lewkowicz added he hoped to that the new Subway could be a source of job opportunities for students hoping to earn extra money.

Alan Lane, a self-described collage artist from Pendelton, epitomizes the art world with one swift thought."Art is like wine, and everyone has their own taste," he said.The opening of artist Ghen Zando-Dennis's latest work was on display at the Carnegie Art Center Gallery in North Tonawanda on Saturday.

Poorly Organized Meeting Rankles SA Clubs

The last of three Student Association club orientations drew negative reactions from club representatives who attended Sunday morning's meeting.Complaints of the meeting being poorly organized, unaccommodating, and lacking essential materials such as handbooks and chairs were expressed throughout the different clubs and organizations under SA.Danelle Schrader, treasurer of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, said she was unhappy with the meeting in general."It was very unorganized," said Schrader, a junior aerospace engineering major.

Volleyball Finishes Second At Tournament

The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team (7-6, 0-0 Mid-American Conference) concluded play at the James Madison/Days Inn Invitational on Saturday, with two wins and one controversial loss.They began play in Harrisonburg, Va.
