University Sits Down with Workers Rights Group

Two years of work by UB Students Against Sweatshops culminated Thursday in an open forum with a representative from the Workers Rights Consortium, who met earlier in the day with UB President John Simpson to talk about UB joining the labor rights organization."We've been organizing to affiliate with WRC for two years now, and for most of that time we've had a completely unreceptive administration," said Colin O'Malley, a UBSAS member who helped organize the event. The WRC is an independent monitoring board that ensures that factories where clothing bearing the UB logo is produced are in compliance with labor standards."I feel we've given the university plenty of information and reason, and I think we're getting to the point where the administration doesn't have a reason not to join," O'Malley added.Scott Nova, the executive director of the WRC, said his meeting with Simpson was "a pleasant discussion," but he could not characterize whether Simpson was leaning towards a decision on joining the group.Dennis Black, vice president for Student Affairs, called Thursday a "listening day," that was part of the natural process of looking into the decision whether to affiliate with the WRC.

Mellow Keller: Nothing Staged

It makes perfect sense that Keller Williams would put out a live album. Most of his studio discs sounded like live discs to begin with, and all of Williams' contemporaries in the jam-oriented genre, such as Dave Matthews, The String Cheese Incident and Phish have made names for themselves with their live acts more than their studio discs. This probably is because most of Keller Williams' music is improvised.

No Clothes On Anybody

Any band whose press materials include the phrase, "Dudes who love to slug mass brew," is ripe for punk rock.By the end of the evening, as the four sweaty, near-naked members of Rehasher bounced off each other for the last time and the last leather loveseat ride was given in the middle of Groove Night Club, it was pretty clear that there is still some decent punk music in the world. In the vein of Dillinger Four and Screeching Weasel - whose song, "Hey Suburbia" the band covered later in their set - Gainesville, Fla.'s Rehasher made their Buffalo debut to a small but fervent crowd Monday evening.Featuring Roger of Less Than Jake, Gui and Geis from Army of Ponch and Jake from Savage Brewtality, Rehasher abides by the Less Than Jake rule of not using last names.

Electing Bush was Mistake

I am angry. Not just because Bush won the election, or Kerry conceded, or that the right wing agenda is once again being pushed onto the general public or that my rights have been violated for four years and more of my rights as a citizen of this country are going to be erased in the next four.

Wiry Wrestler Ready to Dominate

Mark McKnight, like so many other college students, has a bone to pick with his parents.Sure, the UB wrestler heads into his sophomore season with the Bulls ranked first in the MAC in his 125 pound weight class, and seventh nationally.Sure, wrestling has allowed him opportunities - a shot at qualifying for the Olympic games, a trip to Venezuela for the Junior Pan-American Games - few of his peers have experienced.Sure, McKnight's instant success at the college level is undeniably attributable to the passion for wrestling he developed as a kid growing up in western Pennsylvania, to those long car rides, every weekend, to wrestling tournaments all over the northeast that his parents insisted upon.Sure, Mark McKnight may be sitting happily near the top of the college wrestling world, but just once Mom and Dad, just one Saturday morning, couldn't Mark have stayed in bed and watched "X-Men?""I still give them a hard time about that, we still have some heated discussions," a chuckling McKnight said of the seemingly weekly wrestling tournaments he attended as a kid in lieu of Saturday morning cartoons.
