Simpson Lays Out His Strategy

As part of his plan to take UB from a good school to a great school, President John B. Simpson has developed an eight-part plan and made some major personnel changes on the fifth floor of Capen Hall.In an interview with The Spectrum last week Simpson said UB should be a more accessible school with a strong future vision and a focus on academics first.Echoing the theme of his inauguration speech, Simpson stressed the importance of access to higher education for people of all ethnic and economic backgrounds."Public higher education plays a fundamental role in our society, and I don't want us to ever lose sight of its necessary, critically necessary role in providing access to whoever has the talent," he said.Now 11 months into his tenure at UB, Simpson has outlined eight guidelines to make UB a stronger institution in the world of higher education.

Tall, positive and a natural leader, Nikki Morzenti has all the right components to be a great volleyball player.Though Morzenti is only a sophomore, she has already been thrust into a leadership role on the court for the UB Bulls.Lately, Morzenti has averaged around 11 kills and seven digs per game.

GSA Begins Fee Hike Vote

Starting today, graduate students will vote on whether Graduate Student Association fees should be mandatory, and much like the undergraduate vote in September, they will also decide whether to increase the fee for the first time in four years.This year, the Graduate Student Association has proposed a $9 increase that would bring the total fee to $48 per semester.The vote will continue through Friday, with polling places in the GSA office in the Student Union and in Harriman Hall.As set by the SUNY Board of Trustees, the GSA activity fee - which every graduate student pays each semester - must be voted on every four years.

Loss to Falcons Ends Volleyball Season

The UB volleyball team ended its regular season with a road loss to Bowling Green (16-13, 8-8 MAC) on Saturday night to bring Buffalo's record to 8-21 overall and 1-15 in the Mid-American Conference for the 2004 season.Victory was crucial for Bowling Green to ensure that the first-round of the MAC Tournament would be played in Anderson Arena, BGSU's home court.

Grapplers Finish Seventh At Brockport

The UB wrestling team opened its season Saturday with a seventh-place finish in a competitive 11-team field at SUNY Brockport.Four Bulls placed sixth or higher at the competition."It's a heck of an opening because you're wrestling Ohio State, you're wrestling Oklahoma, and some of these other teams that aren't necessarily Big 10 or Big 12 teams are very good.

Burgio Suggests Reforms For Student Insurance

SA President Anthony Burgio is calling for a re-evaluation of UB's medical insurance program, a service of Sub-Board I, because he believes students pay too much for the medical services they receive.UB mandates that all students be covered with some form of medical insurance.
