Five arrested for cocaine in Clement

UB police arrested five Buffalo residents early Sunday morning for the possession of cocaine with the intent to sell in Clement Hall on South Campus.John Holland, Gary Holland, Richard Maxwell, Timothy Mack and Twon Robinson were all arrested and charged with criminal possession of narcotics and second-degree trespassing, according to John Grela, director of public safety.UB police received a call at 3:38 a.m.

For the second year in a row, the UB Bulls will play a home playoff game to start the Mid-American Conference tournament.UB will face the Northern Illinois Huskies (11-16 overall, 7-11 MAC) in the first round, for the third year in a row.Despite their opponent's losing record, the Bulls are not looking past the Huskies heading into Cleveland."If you look at the teams that are so-called bottom teams, Marshall won (Saturday), Northern (Illinois) lost in overtime, Central (Michigan) won (Saturday), and Eastern (Michigan) lost in overtime," said Bulls' head coach Reggie Witherspoon.

Simpson gives caveats for tuition hike plan

As the debate over tuition increases continues in Albany, UB President John Simpson has had an active role in trying to implement a tuition hike plan that allows students to better prepare for SUNY tuition increases.With SUNY tuition jumping $900 last year, and the cost of attending UB steadily increasing, Simpson said he agrees with SUNY Chancellor Robert King's plan to raise tuition only at a student's time of enrollment."Tuition that any student would pay would be understood that it would only increase for the incoming student, and then would stay constant throughout their time here," Simpson said.But Simpson said there are a few extra conditions that would have to be in place for him to support the tuition plan.

Backlit in a flood of cool blue light, the members of Centro-matic modestly took up their instruments and captivated the audience at Nietzsche's Thursday night.Though the crowd had thinned between The Baptist Generals' opening song and after Jesse Malin's humor-filled, two-person acoustic show, those who remained to hear Centro-matic perform were certainly not disappointed.Erupting into song, the band had a Flaming Lips feel, though it seems that the men of Centro-matic are more in tune with their instruments than their counterparts.This band is definitely one of the talented few that actually sound better live.

Drawn to UB by the university's ambitious hopes for the future, Jorge Jose was the fourth and final candidate to make his pitch for the vice president of research position at an open forum held Friday in Park Hall.Jose, who is presently the chair of the physics department at Northeastern University, fielded questions from the 10 faculty members on hand for the hour-long session, and stressed that were he offered UB's top research job, his aim would be effecting serious and progressive change."I'm not interested in only management," Jose said.

Nearly 2,000 people packed into the Center for the Arts Main Stage on Friday evening to enjoy an extravagant voyage across the continents at International Fiesta 2005, "Passport to the World."The competition was fierce, but the Indian Student Association came away with first place, followed by the Latin American SA in second place, and the Japanese SA took a close third.In past years, International Fiesta was held in the Student Union, but due to the overwhelmingly increasing spectator population, the event was moved to the Center for the Arts and was converted from a free talent show to this years' first annual International Fiesta competition.The competition was judged by seven of UB's faculty and staff, and the decision was anything but easy.
