Napoleon Dynamite stinks

This ship may actually sail.Key word: may.Next week, after I finish my final column - and stay tuned for that friends, cause it's going to be the gravy on top of five years of hot, delicious column potatoes - I am going to be putting on a bathing suit, wetting down that slip and slide, and going headfirst into reality. As I start pedaling on my ride to be the next amazing cyclist, I'd like to clue you in on some objectives I did not complete following the day I waltzed into SUNY Buffalo in my maroon Phish shirt and board shorts (Yes, I just admitted that I spent a good year in hippie jail.

Between techno and trash

The self-titled album from Giles, the new project from former Prayer For Cleansing and current Between the Buried and Me vocalist Tommy Rogers, is a nine-song play list comprised of short bursts of Nintendo 64-like beats with breathy, whiny lyrics. For example, "Desk Seeking Spades" sounds like Giles allowed the dancing, backwards-talking midget from "Twin Peaks" to sing his broken, nearly undecipherable words with a New Age electronica beat.Few songs crest the two-and-a-half minute mark, a delightful and reassuring surprise. This album might be appropriate for an alternative techno club if the proprietor were into taking risks and the clubbers were under the influence of at least four alcoholic beverages.Refreshingly, "Replay" contains intriguing lyrics such as "Happy apple come a little closer." The beat is slower and less erratic, as Rogers's voice fades with a hypnotic ebb and flow.

"Beyond, in, and here"

Classic, ordinary and standard are a few words that would never, ever be used to describe these works. In fact, there is nothing the least bit conventional about the art currently on display at the Carnegie Art Center, 240 Goundry St., North Tonawanda. The exhibit, entitled "Beyond/In Western New York," features the work of three local artists: John Knecht, Tammy Renee Brackett and Patrick Robideau. While the name alludes to the inclusion of Western New York and its surrounding regions, these three artists bring a different meaning to the name of the exhibit, going above and beyond with their creative projects.
