Club boxing has strong showing at amateur event

Boxing connoisseurs know that there is nothing amateur about former light-heavyweight contender Jimmy Ralston or his son "Lightning" Les Ralston.But on Saturday night the elder Ralston took the time to fill in as the trainer for the UB Boxing club's amateur bouts.A large crowd of UB students as well as many local boxing fans packed into Michael's Banquet Facility in Hamburg, N.Y.

A deluge of spam

If you're tired of ads in your inbox that claim you can lose 10 pounds in 10 days, or that it's easy to refinance your mortgage, you may be disappointed to hear that e-mail spam is here to stay at UB accounts.Though it is well known that e-mail spam is a global problem, many students wonder why nobody in the Office of Computer and Information Technology has found a way to solve it, at least locally.Some students said they have tried to protect their e-mail accounts, but the frustration continues."I see a ton of spam in my bulk folder everyday, and tons that I don't know how to separate in my Mulberry," said Jim Horng, a senior English major.

Einstein lights up the night at UB

Beaming on the wall of Fronczak Hall, the contemplative face of Albert Einstein gazed down Monday night on an audience of science enthusiasts gathered to celebrate his achievements.On the 50th anniversary of Einstein's death, and in honor of his "miracle year" 100 years ago, the UB community took part in a worldwide celebration Monday night that lit up the campus from end to end.The light relay started with the illuminating of UB stadium, followed by the Center for the Arts and Bonner Hall.

The saying goes, "Home is where the heart is," but so far this year, UB's baseball team has been playing like it has a home field advantage no matter where it travels.Sporting a record of 11-19 so far this year, the Bulls will play St.

Throughout his last two seasons playing for the UB baseball team, James Kingsley has been crowned as one of the most dominant players featured in the Bulls' lineup.This season, the first baseman is batting .297 with seven home runs and 28 RBIs.

Birthdays in the UB Office of Equity, Diversity, and Affirmative Action Administration, without Loyce Stewart, will never be the same.Stewart, who died last Monday at the age of 60, served as director of the office since 1999, defending social justice on campus while enforcing laws against various types of discrimination.According to co-workers, Stewart took a special joy in celebrating every aspect of the lives of those close to her, with a special emphasis on birthdays."Loyce loved to celebrate birthdays," said Barbara Burke, assistant director of the office.

Students get military medal for signing up during war

Gary Lynch and Jay Warrick said they didn't think twice.While the war in Iraq raged, both UB students left the friendly blue bubble of campus last year to join the military.As a result, they have both earned the National Defense Medal, a yellow and red striped cloth attached to a bronze medal, reserved for American men and women who join during a time of war.Gary Lynch, a sophomore from Ridge, N.Y., left UB for six years of active duty after joining the Navy on Aug.

Bulls guard arrested on drug charges

A freshman guard on UB's basketball team was arrested in the Ellicott Complex Thursday and charged with the sale and possession of marijuana.Wallace Hall, a freshman from Detroit who began to earn playing time during the Bulls' drive toward the MAC title game, has been suspended from the team for now, according to Bulls coach Reggie Witherspoon."At the conclusion of the university and judicial review of this matter, Wally's status in our basketball program will be reevaluated," stated Witherspoon in a press release.Student-athlete rules at UB require that Hall meet with Witherspoon, a drug counselor, and university officials.Team officials would not comment further on the incident nor how it would affect Hall's career with the Bulls.

Search for athletic director begins

President John Simpson announced Monday that UB will finally start the search for a permanent athletic director in May, once he receives a report from consultant Gene Corrigan, who was hired to evaluate the entire athletics program.William Maher, who has served as interim athletic director since June 2003, told The Spectrum on Tuesday he would like to be considered for the permanent position.Maher called the evaluation process positive and said he anticipates it will yield several suggestions to help UB compete on the highest level and win championships."It's been a process that's gone as we've expected it to," Maher said.

Incumbent wins SA Assembly election

Hoping to build on the successes of the past year, the Student Association Assembly re-elected Hassan Shibly as chair on Monday.Shibly, a freshman psychology major, defeated fellow Assembly member Matt Miller in a secret ballot election for the position.After his victory, Shibly said he is looking forward to working hard next year to increase student involvement and tackle student issues."I encourage all students to get involved next year," Shibly said.
