"Track overcomes bad weather, baffles competition at UB Open"

UB's track and field hosted its only home meet of the season Saturday in front of a crowd of family, friends and fans that braved the nasty weather.At the UB Open, the Bulls proved once again that they are made for tough conditions and they used the home advantage to complete the meet as the team with the most overall wins, although the meet was not scored by team."The athletes, especially the seniors, like to be able to compete at home.

On track to find a cure for cancer

A global fundraiser for cancer research that celebrates hope for both survivors and victims comes to UB for the first time this weekend.That event, the Relay For Life, represents the hope that people lost to cancer will never be forgotten, people who face cancer will be supported, and that one day, cancer will be cured.Teams of participants fundraise prior to the event, which is organized by the American Cancer Society.

"At UB Open, home sweet home for track and field"

The track and field team will sprint, jump, throw and race at UB Stadium for the first and only time this year as they host the UB Open this weekend.The Open is the only home meet for the Bulls and an important bridge for UB's track and field team as Buffalo prepares for the upcoming Mid-American Conference Championships and the NCAA Regionals.Buffalo's challengers include teams from Fredonia, Alfred University, Alfred State University and Erie Community College.

Athletic director search begins

President John Simpson announced Monday that UB will start the search for a permanent athletic director in May.The search will begin once Simpson receives a report from consultant Gene Corrigan, who was hired to evaluate the entire athletics program.William Maher, who has served as interim athletic director since June 2003, told The Spectrum on Tuesday he would like to be considered for the permanent position.Maher is also considered a leading candidate for the athletic director job at his alma mater, Canisius University, whose deadline for naming an athletic director is the first week in May.Although officials said UB's search has not started, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Thursday that Brian Colleary, the athletic director at Duquesne University, is a candidate for the top athletics job at UB.Colleary told the Post-Gazette he plans to interview with UB later this month and that he is flattered to be considered for the job.

Committee confronts lack of minority faculty

The number of minority faculty members at UB is failing to keep pace with the growing percentage of minority students, according to a report from the UB Affirmative Action Committee to the Faculty Senate on Wednesday.According to committee chair Mattie Rhodes, 50 percent of university students nationwide will be minority students by the year 2015, which is vastly disproportional to the percentage of minority faculty at UB."American universities are educating a larger and more diverse group of students than ever before," Rhodes said.

Bulls softball takes one from No. 1

On paper, it looked like a perfect opportunity for the UB softball team to make its mark on the Mid-American Conference - a doubleheader against the number one team in the MAC, the Central Michigan Chippewas.The Bulls had an auspicious start to the day, defeating CMU 2-0, but the second game did not turn out quite the same way.The Chippewas (20-10 overall, 10-2 MAC) are perennial favorites to win the MAC and were even able to beat one of the premier teams in the NCAA when they beat the University of Michigan Wolverines on Apr.
