Plenty of sax appeal

Get ten saxophones together and it sounds like an accordion.Luckily, that was a good sound for many of the ragtime and jazz selections played by the UB Saxophone Ensemble Sunday afternoon in Lippes Concert Hall.

Well, we're wrapping up the semester here at UB, and like every year, all the sports - college and professional - seem to dull down just in time for finals.So to liven things up a bit, we here at The Spectrum bring to you the second annual Spectrys!These are the most prestigious awards given out by any UB publication.

If there's one sure sign students can count on every year to remind them the semester is coming to a close, it's teacher evaluations.Passed out in classes and arriving in e-mail inboxes, the surveys filled out to rate professors and classes tend to draw mixed opinions on whether they are effective.

"Less fighting, more punching"

When Tuesday's concert at the Buffalo Icon got a little ugly, Indianapolis, Ind.'s Haste the Day just stopped playing.After two kids in the mosh pit took their karate kicks and windmill punches a little too seriously, resulting in a flood of fists and shoving in front of the stage, Haste the Day lead vocalist Jimmy Ryan told his bandmates to stop playing."Aw, look what you did, that was going to be the most intense breakdown you have ever heard and you made me stop it," Ryan said to the crowd.

Men's tennis eyes title

With three Mid-American Conference match victories this season, the UB men's tennis team produced its best results since joining Division I competition.The team's outdoor season will come to an end at the MAC Championships this week, held in Kalamazoo, Mich.

"During Passover, a lack of kosher food on campus"

As the Jewish community celebrates Passover this week, some UB students are finding it difficult to follow dietary customs that come with the major holiday.To follow their traditions, some Jewish students have signed up for special lunches at Hillel, and many more have taken advantage of the Passover sections at Wegmans and Tops, but keeping kosher can still be hard on the UB campus.Passover, which lasts for eight days, commemorates the Jewish exodus from slavery in Egypt with several traditional symbols.

The next big thing

UB's high-tech, high profile center for bioinformatics is on schedule for completion next semester as the new bioinformatics major also nears the end of its development, according to UB officials.The downtown New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences Complex, which has been under construction since 2002, has received over $200 million in funding.According to Bruce Holm, executive director of the center, all construction should be completed "sometime this fall." One of the three buildings that make up the complex, the newest Hauptmann-Woodward Medical Research Institute, is already completed and a ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for May 12."A whole lot of progress is being made, which I am really excited about," said James Willis, chief of staff to President John Simpson.

Snoop Dogg may draw non-hip hop fans

With the Spring Fest lineup set for good, many students say they are looking forward to Saturday night's concert featuring rappers Snoop Dogg, Jadakiss, Cassidy and reggae artist Elephant Man.Angela Knight, a senior psychology major, said her reason for attending Spring Fest is all about the performers."I'm going because it's people that I'm actually interested in seeing," she said.

Affirmative action was enacted to amend past injustices experienced by various groups. While the system may not be perfect, postmodern American society has hardly demonstrated its ability to be blind to differences such as race, ethnicity, age, gender and sexual orientation.

Women's tennis to face strong Miami squad at MACs

This weekend, the women's tennis team will be putting final exams, term papers and other end-of-semester activities to the side as the Bulls compete for the Mid-American Conference title.The Bulls (8-6 overall, 4-5 MAC) are set to face Miami (Ohio) on Friday in the opening round of this year's MAC tournament.
