'Curtain Up!' reveals Buffalo entertainment

It is a rare occasion for Buffalo's Theater District to be crowded with hundreds of people. It is even more rare for those people to be dressed in tuxedos and evening gowns.Friday night, Buffalo residents showed up in the Theater District decked in their finest garb for Buffalo's 24th annual "Curtain Up!" festival, ready for a night of entertainment, cocktails and fine dining.The evening was split up into three acts.

Student Association President Dela Yador confirmed on Sunday this year's Fall Fest lineup of Kanye West, rapper Common, "American Idol" winner Fantasia Barrino and up-and-coming R&B singer Keyshia Cole.He also announced a new concert coming to UB on Oct.

Students make use of new Alfiero Center

With a price tag of $7 million, the Alfiero Center is the first building largely supported by private donors on UB property, and its striking glass facade has received a relatively warm welcome since its grand opening April 26.The center is named in honor of Sal H.

Crabby artists at Hallwalls

Dissent comes in many forms, be it in organized protests, petitions or riots.Friday night at Hallwalls Art Gallery, it came in the form of paintings, video presentations and even stuffed gloves."Leaves of Crab Grass" is an exhibition that examines the nature of dissent and its present condition in post-9/11 America.John Massier, curator of Hallwalls, found his inspiration for the show from Walt Whitman's "Leaves of Grass" and Philip K.

Still undefeated

The UB men's soccer team is off to its best start in 15 years. They remain undefeated after wining two games and taking home first-place honors in the 2005 Kick-Off Classic held at Georgia Southern University.In game one, the Bulls (7-0-0) scored early and scored often, as they put a hurting on Centenary College (0-6-0) on Saturday in the first round of the tournament, defeating the Gents 7-0.Led by the usual scoring feats of sophomore Lee Catchpole, who tallied two goals on the day, the Bulls out-shot the Gents by a 21-5 margin.The Bulls jumped out to a quick lead when junior Brain Knapp fired a shot passed Centenary's keeper Donnie Henderson at the 6:42 mark.

FSEC and SA address student-professor divide

In an effort to promote student-faculty integration, Student Association officials and the Faculty Senate Executive Committee met Wednesday to discuss future endeavors for bringing faculty and students closer together.With 400-plus seating in lecture halls and sparse office hours from professors and teaching assistants, freshman retention has been dwindling in recent years.

Two scores in the first 10 minutes against St. Bonaventure sent the UB men's soccer team en route to notching its first road win and continuing its unbeaten season."We were really off to a fast start," said John Astudillo, head coach of the regionally ranked team.

Tense meeting confronts alleged anti-Semitism

A Wednesday meeting about maintaining peaceable discussion led to a heated argument at the Center for Tomorrow when the UB chapter of the Scholars for Peace in the Middle East gathered to discuss anti-Semitism at UB for the second time.The meeting brought together many of the principle figures in a campus drama that stretches back to April 2004, when a lecture by Norman Finkelstein, a controversial pro-Palestinian critic of Israel, incited conflict among students, faculty and the Buffalo community.

Petition started to resolve SA bribery charges

Members of last semester's Reform Our Campus party began acquiring signatures on Wednesday for a petition that would pressure Student Association officials to finally make a ruling on charges of bribery and slander filed six months ago.Spearheaded by Matt Pelkey, the petition calls for SA to settle the charges with its Election and Credentials committee, and then take the case to the Student-wide Judiciary.If SA does not act quickly, the petition threatens to begin the impeachment process for the entire Elevation '05 party, which includes now-President Dela Yador, Vice President Sonia Kang and Treasurer Mazin Kased."What we're going to argue is that number one, obviously the complaints that we filed are valid and the SA is intentionally not dealing with these," Pelkey said.

Attendance adds Katrina fundraiserStudents and faculty have the opportunity to raise money for Hurricane Katrina victims relocated to Western New York by attending Buffalo's football home opener versus Rutgers Saturday night.UB Student Association, The Chickering Group and Frito Lay are sponsoring "Students Creating Change." 50 cents will be donated for every UB student with a valid ID who walks through the turnstile at UB Stadium.Faculty and staff are participating in the "Faculty/Staff Challenge." Student Affairs and the Division of Athletics are coordinating general admission tickets for faculty and staff members for a $5 donation to the relief efforts.Gates will open at 6 p.m.
