UB prepared for potential bird flu epidemic

If and when avian flu hits the United States, UB experts say its impact at the university would be hard to predict, but there is no reason to believe college students are at high risk.Avian flu, also known as bird flu, has been a hot topic on newswires across the globe, with experts predicting a pandemic.

A familiar sight: Bulls dominate Fresno State 85-69

Last year, Roderick Middleton's ESPN-highlight block against Fresno State marked the turning point of the Bulls' season.With that image still dancing in their fans' heads, the men's basketball team trounced the Bulldogs 85-69 on Wednesday, never trailing in a victory that saw the only tie of the game in the first 21 seconds, when the score was knotted at zero.The Bulls (5-1 overall) scored the first 11 points of the game until Fresno State guard Dwight O'Neil finally hit a three pointer almost four minutes after tip off.

"Piracy warnings down, risks remain"

The legal notices UB receives alleging copyright infringement have declined the past two years, but many students are still downloading and keeping large music files despite the risk, according to Harvey Axlerod, UB's computer discipline officer.Though no lawsuits have been filed against UB students, the university has received takedown letters from the MPAA and other companies representing the movie, music and software industries.UB officials expect to handle an estimated 100 takedown notices this year, the same as last year, Axlerod said.

Cable break causes blackout for northeast Buffalo

More than 8,500 National Grid customers lost power Monday evening when an underground cable beneath Kenmore Avenue broke, according to National Grid spokesman Tom Corbett.The power outage started at 5:15 p.m., initially affecting about 4,000 customers.

Balancing trays and schoolwork

There is no doubt that students have a lot on their proverbial plates. But add a tray, a bus bin and a hot plate, and it's obvious the many students who pay for both school and their social lives by waiting tables or serving buffets have a little bit more.

Private parts and public knowledge

Controversies surrounding the Solomon Amendment will come to a head soon, but while private colleges have been able to stand up to the legislation, public schools like UB are at a loss with how to keep their students' privacy at a premium.Should a Supreme Court decision allow universities to not turn student databases over to military recruiters without the threat of losing funding, UB should take the moral high ground and withhold that information.
