A grand night for Cage

Standing at the foul line with less than six minutes to play and Buffalo down by two to Ball State, Calvin Cage let the basketball fly from his fingers as if it were any other shot. But by the time the ball had sunk through the net, Cage was a new member of an exclusive 13-person club: UB players who have scored 1,000 career points."I had no idea how close I was," said the senior guard.

Gill looks to turn the tide

Turner Gill may have felt a bit like a fish out of water when he arrived in Buffalo, unfamiliar with the city and far from a winning football program, but it seems to be something he has since taken in stride.Amidst the blue couches, blue chairs and blue carpets of his UB Stadium office, the first-time head coach has already started to make himself comfortable.

Hicks downs Smith in WNY match-up

UB senior Garrett Hicks officially welcomed freshman Kane Smith to the big-time on Sunday afternoon in Alumni Arena as the Bulls dropped a close match to UNC-Greensboro, 22-20.The match drew a crowd estimated at over 400 fans, a large part of which came to see how Smith, now at UNC-Greensboro, would fare at the colligate level after being a two-time New York State High School Champion from Salamanca.

Pumping iron with idiots

While flat-benching the other day at Alumni Arena, I was brazenly interrupted by a loud, throaty orgasmic man-scream from another nearby bench that caused me to fumble with the bar. While I rubbed my possibly torn lateral deltoid, I watched the gym sloth raise his flabby arms in exultation for successfully maxing-out.

"'Brokeback Mountain': where cowboys, directors dare"

Ang Lee has gone with "Brokeback Mountain" where no major filmmaker has dared.Homosexuality has become a topic of increasing social concern in the last few years, but aside from Gus Van Sant's "My Own Private Idaho," it has largely been ignored. The key to "Brokeback Mountain's" success is that it addresses social issues discretely, with its eyes tilted towards its boots.Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger of "A Knight's Tale") and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal of "Donnie Darko") are assigned to tend to a flock of sheep on Brokeback Mountain over the course of a summer in 1963.

A stroke of regression

The Strokes' third album, "First Impressions of Earth," is an album heavy on concept and light on lyrics."Impressions," a follow up to the 2003 album "Room on Fire," imagines someone in outer space discovering Earth for the first time and documenting what they see.Listening to The Strokes, one can see a band struggling to remain relevant in the face of continual pressure from critics and music snobs. The lack of a strong single is one of the detrimental elements.

Turning over a new leaf

The hiring of Turner Gill as UB's head football coach should prove beneficial in bringing a winning era to the school's stunted football program.

Let's be realistic

Now that PJ Bottoms is closed for good, and Molly's Pub faces an emergency suspension of its liquor license, I think it is time we all took a deep, cathartic breath and admit that the legal drinking age of 21 is a stupid, impractical law.I, for one, can no longer stand to hear the self-righteous sound bites from university administrators and local police who pretend that shutting down a place like PJ Bottoms has somehow served the greater good. One less bar on Main Street, even if it was infamous for its underage crowd, will not stop freshmen from flocking to get drunk.
