Ang Lee has gone with "Brokeback Mountain" where no major filmmaker has dared.Homosexuality has become a topic of increasing social concern in the last few years, but aside from Gus Van Sant's "My Own Private Idaho," it has largely been ignored. The key to "Brokeback Mountain's" success is that it addresses social issues discretely, with its eyes tilted towards its boots.Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger of "A Knight's Tale") and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal of "Donnie Darko") are assigned to tend to a flock of sheep on Brokeback Mountain over the course of a summer in 1963.
The Strokes' third album, "First Impressions of Earth," is an album heavy on concept and light on lyrics."Impressions," a follow up to the 2003 album "Room on Fire," imagines someone in outer space discovering Earth for the first time and documenting what they see.Listening to The Strokes, one can see a band struggling to remain relevant in the face of continual pressure from critics and music snobs. The lack of a strong single is one of the detrimental elements.

Now that PJ Bottoms is closed for good, and Molly's Pub faces an emergency suspension of its liquor license, I think it is time we all took a deep, cathartic breath and admit that the legal drinking age of 21 is a stupid, impractical law.I, for one, can no longer stand to hear the self-righteous sound bites from university administrators and local police who pretend that shutting down a place like PJ Bottoms has somehow served the greater good. One less bar on Main Street, even if it was infamous for its underage crowd, will not stop freshmen from flocking to get drunk.

As hundreds of onlookers stood in the beautifully renovated Hallwalls building for its grand opening Saturday night, it was a comfort to know that this architectural relic was saved from becoming a parking lot, salvaged by one of Buffalo's few but foremost celebrities.Renowned singer-songwriter Ani DiFranco reportedly invested $2.7 million of her own money in a $10 million project towards renovating the 1871 Asbury Delaware Methodist Church on the corner of Delaware and Tupper Streets that was originally supposed to be torn down. The old church will now be used by DiFranco's record label Righteous Babe Records and will also be a multi-faceted haven for the Buffalo arts community.

Cover it in chocolate and a miracle or two?Well, Willy Wonka may make everything he bakes satisfying and delicious, but now even he is getting a run for his money. It looks as if it could be a salon, a spa, or a women's boutique, but Butterwood is none of those things.
