Not every girl's a princess

As I watched the NBA All-Star Celebrity Game Friday night, I was at first amused by the antics of the wannabe ballers, but then I started to get aggravated.From the incessant shots of Eva Longoria to the undermining of a women's on-court talent, it began to remind me of my experiences as a sports editor.Despite the fact that two WNBA athletes were on the court playing with the men, the woman that received the most TV time from ESPN was the sultry Desperate Housewife.Longoria was the coach of the H-Town Rockets.

UB alum and multi-billion-dollar entrepreneur Robert E. Rich passed away peacefully last Wednesday at the age of 92, leaving behind a catalog of achievements almost as impressive as his approach to life.Known as the father of UB's storied wrestling program, an avid football enthusiast and generous contributor, Rich's legacy in Western New York has not gone unnoticed."The individual contributions made by him are really quite extraordinary," said former UB president William Greiner, who knew Rich for more than 20 years.

Last week's swirling windstorm that tore through campus wasn't just a force of nature: it was the sighs of relief from potential graduate students everywhere.Students who were dreading a harder Graduate Record Examination (GRE) dodged a bullet last week when the Educational Testing Service announced the new GRE would not be introduced until fall 2007.

Bulls eye home playoff game after road win over Ohio

It was a lot closer than it should have been at the end, but women's basketball pulled through 84-77 in a nail biter against Ohio University at the Convocation Center on Tuesday night.The Bulls went on a 9-4 run to take an early 12-8 lead, but Buffalo gave up that lead on the road and the game saw multiple first-half ties before junior forward Viorica Badinici hit a three-pointer at the end of the half to give the Bulls a two-point lead of 32-30.Buffalo's 32 first-half points were the most points the Bulls have scored in a half since their conference opener against the Miami RedHawks."It was nice to see them put up some points.

Bulls split doubleheader to open season

A Bulls baseball squad full of talented but untested newcomers took the diamond for the first time this season Sunday, losing the first game of a doubleheader but picking up the nightcap at Appalachian State.After the first game was rained out on Saturday, the Bulls dropped the first game on Sunday 12-6 and won the second by a score of 4-2.In the win, Buffalo got out of the gate quickly.

SWJ ruling expected

The Student-wide Judiciary is expected to rule this week on the alleged misconduct of Student Association Treasurer Mazin Kased, almost a year after accusations of bribery, slander and perjury were filed against SA's executive board."We closed the investigation," said John Grela, director of Public Safety, referring a criminal investigation into the charges.All findings from the University Police have been turned over to the Student-wide Judiciary for review.

'Beauty of Religion' discussed by people of faith

Choosing flattery over debate, three community faith leaders addressed what they perceived as "beautiful" about their respective religions Monday night in the Student Union Theater.Rabbi Gurary, who represented the Jewish faith, began his dialogue with a story from the Talmud, a "sourcebook of (Jewish) oral law," customs and legends that expands on the Torah.Gurary told the story of a man who approached a Rabbi about converting to Judaism.

'Ghosts' keeps up appearances

Mrs. Alving stops dead in the middle of the room, the color drained from her face, and tells the Pastor, "I am half inclined to think that we are all ghosts."Such instances of haunted pasts and lingering secrets reign throughout the 19th-century play "Ghosts," now showing at the Studio Arena Theatre."Ghosts" is written by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen, a man who is famous for his unabashed handling of social issues that were considered controversial in his day.It deals with the backlash caused by a loveless marriage that destroys or damages several lives.Mrs. Alving has tried over the years to keep the secrets of her family from others in order to maintain an appearance of perfection, but Ibsen depicts her as being liberal-minded and strong.
