Diabetes study at UB helps identify risk factors

Epidemiologists at the School of Public Health and Health Professions have exposed groundbreaking research that can detect the presence of diabetes in women years before the disease is even diagnosed.The study involved 1,455 participants from Western New York who were under investigation for patterns of alcohol consumption and cardiovascular disease between 1996 and 2001.

Assessing the damage

The hot water pipe bursts that affected Goodyear Hall residents on Feb. 15 and 24 continue to leave their mark on students as damage estimates begin to add up.Many students who felt the effects of the incidents have very similar complaints, now that the immediate crisis is over.

This is exemplified in the case of the senior guard Darwin Young of the men's basketball team, hard work paid off in dividends.Young's basketball roots can be traced back locally to Hutch Tech High School, right here in the Nickel City.

Athletes of the Week namedThe track and field team swept the Athletes of the Week with junior Rayshon Higgins and senior Patrice Coney garnering this week's honors.Higgins recorded his third Mid-American Conference Championship in the triple jump on Friday by posting a distance of 49-feet 9-inches in his last attempt to successfully defend his indoor title.

Citizenship requests soar before changes

Citizenship applications are skyrocketing across the nation as green-card holders rush to avoid a proposed fee increase, a revised civics test and possible changes in immigration law.Applications filed in Los Angeles and six surrounding counties shot up to 18,024 in January from 7,334 in the same month last year, a 146 percent increase, according to U.S.

Women's tennis stays perfect

Zero was the number for the day for the women's tennis team as they defeated the Duquesne Dukes 7-0 and improved their record to 5-0.With junior Andrea Novaceanu still out of the lineup, Buffalo (5-0) was provided with another opportunity for other players to shine in the lineup against Duquesne (4-2)."Everyone played and got experience," said Buffalo women's tennis head coach Kathy Twist.

English Poet visits Buffalo

UB's Poetics Plus series continued Saturday with a reading by English poet Miles Champion at Rust Belt Books.Champion, a native of Great Britain and a current resident of New York City, read to an audience that included several graduate students from the UB Poetics program as well as old friends.

'My Angry Vagina'

Eve Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues" came to Baird Recital Hall Friday evening, performed by females from the UB and Buffalo community.The performance was produced by The Progressive Law Society at UB as a part of V-day, a campaign to increase awareness and end violence against women.
