SA reduces pay of its executive board

The Student Association has cut the stipends of its president, vice president and treasurer by $2,000 each - putting $6,000 total back into SA's roughly $3.6 million budget. On Sunday evening, the SA Senate passed the 2014-15 undergraduate SA budget with eight senators approving and three abstaining.

UB spearheads first annual Science Week

Eunice Lewin thinks there is a "national urgency to encourage more students to get involved in science." So when she approached some of the leaders of the City of Buffalo to create the first annual Science Week (April 7-11), she was trying to help solve that issue. Lewin, a SUNY trustee, teamed up with UB, Buffalo State College, Erie Community College, Buffalo Public Schools (BPS) and Mayor Byron Brown to create a weeklong celebration of science for BPS students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

"Ambassadors for Africa breaks stereotypes, changes lives"

UB alumna Erin Willis now understands that "Africa is not this unsafe, unorganized jungle." She attributes her new outlook to the African study abroad program at UB. "It allows students to become more aware of their privilege and also allows them to live in solidarity with populations that are depicted as backwards," she said. Since her trip to Africa, she has gone on to visit Turkey, Jordan, Palestine and other countries.

Songwriting Club offers haven for student musicians

Corey Marikovics has been performing music for 15 years, but when she's on stage at open-mic nights in Buffalo, her heart races and her palms get sweaty. The senior psychology major, who has been singing since childhood, is planning to move to Nashville, Tenn., to pursue music after graduation.

Ahmed claims injustices in Student Association election

Ali Ahmed, a treasurer candidate in last week's Student Association election, feels he was treated unfairly throughout the election process and thinks the election was invalid. Ahmed, who ran independently, said various members of SA - whether intentional or not - hindered his ability to effectively campaign and be a viable candidate in the election.

Spectrum elects 2014-15 editor in chief

The Spectrum's editorial board unanimously voted Sara DiNatale as next year's editor in chief Sunday. DiNatale, a junior English major with a media study minor, is currently a managing editor for the newspaper.

Party in the new SA

James Ingram said he always knew his party had the potential to earn the student body's support. On Thursday, undergraduates proved him right. The Value Party celebrated in the Student Association office as Election and Credentials Chair Matt Siwiec announced Ingram and the rest of his party swept the SA elections. Presidential and vice presidential candidates Ingram and Evan Chen, respectively, won the two executive positions with 250 votes more than the Impact Party.

For Dr. Sanjay Gupta, being a television journalist didn't come easy. In fact, by his own admission, he was bad at it. He had pitched an idea to CNN in 2001 to talk about health issues on television, and though he was a doctor with no television experience, they still gave him a shot.
