While stricken with cancer her junior year, Kelsey Barbour used running as a mechanism to cope. Now a graduate student, Barbour is set to compete in the “4K for Cancer,” a cross-country relay-style event across the United States which will raise money for the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Kids.

Juweria Dahir, a senior sociology major, moved from Mogadishu to Britain in 2002 to escape the sectarian violence in Somalia. Dahir now promises to serve the refugee women in Buffalo and continue empowering women. The Prentice Family Foundation created the Western New York Prosperity Scholarship Program for “entrepreneurial civic-minded students” like Dahir, according to a 2013 UB Graduate School news and events article.
UB’s Haiti Medical Mission is working to prevent the problems that arise when people don’t have access to health care from increasing. The mission is a five-day medical clinic in Fontaine, Haiti. It’s conducted and fundraised by UB’s first-year medical students through the Friends of Fontaine organization that is dedicated to supporting community-based development in Haiti.

Last week was National Eating Disorder Awareness Week, and the theme was “Start a Revolution, Love Your Body.” UB’s Wellness Team, which includes the Wellness Education Center, Counseling Services and Health Services, put on the Wellness Activity Day to raise awareness about and provide support to people struggling with eating disorders.
