Thursday night the UB Women’s Soccer (4-1-1, 0-0-0 MAC) team defeated the Mercyhurst Lakers (0-7-1, 0-0-0 NEC) 4-1 in a one sided affair at UB Stadium. The Bulls remain undefeated at home going into conference play.

In 2007, at the height of the label “emo” being a cultural buzzword, music journalists Leslie Simon and Trevor Kelley published their book Everybody Hurts: An Essential Guide to Emo Culture. The authors lay out the emo value system, consisting of depression, effort (lessness), empathy, faith, insecurity and non-athleticism. The book essentially gave instructions on how to be “emo.” Who are the kids who identify as emo, goth, or alt and what do they all have in common?

Tucked away down Main Street is Fitz Books, a local bookstore still chugging away. The store is settled in an old building with its address splayed out in old type script. The inside opens up to reveal a large warehouse space with white walls, hardwood floors and an ornate tin ceiling. The walls are lined with bookshelves packed with both familiar and unfamiliar authors. The floor boasts a line of tables with even more books displayed on them, and the back half is dedicated to reading chairs and a soon-to-be cafe.

In the fall of 1993 an audience of 7,500 — UB students, Buffalo residents, and fans from everywhere — gathered at Alumni Arena to watch the biggest band in the world. For many, it would be the first and last time they saw Nirvana. They were just sixteen days into the In Utero tour, the album having debuted at No. 1 less than two months earlier.

A win over a Big 4 rival is a promising sign as the Bulls head into the bulk of their season and begin to face in-conference opponents.

After achieving national attention with his form in the 2024-2025 season, former star UB linebacker Shaun Dolac was named to the Los Angeles Rams 53-man roster last Tuesday. Despite going undrafted, the West Seneca native signed a free agent deal to the Rams and impressed throughout training camp and preseason, earning a spot on the team’s final roster ahead of the 2025 NFL season.

Living in Western New York has some perks, especially during the fall season. I've had the privilege of enjoying all of these fall activities and I'm done gate keeping them from everyone. Now as much as Western New York has its benefits, we also have flaws with winter weather, so with that being said, hurry up and enjoy these excursions!

Misuta Chow’s, Buffalo’s only Japanese-American restaurant and arcade, is set to close on Sept. 7. The space offered UB students a culturally unique mix of food, aesthetic and energy. While the place was most well known for its iconic Hello Kitty staircase — a pink and glittery spot for photos, the restaurant also perfectly combined classic American, local favorites and Tokyo-inspired cuisines. The support from UB students helped sustain co-owners Johny Chow and Christi Allen for the last seven years.

The University at Buffalo women's volleyball (2-1, 0-0 MAC) team started off their season over the weekend when they hosted the Buffalo Invite presented by UB Dental. The Bulls hosted Liberty, Marist and Rutgers at Alumni Arena.

The Bulls (0-1, 0-0 MAC) held their season opening game against Big Ten’s Minnesota last Thursday. Entering the game as 16.5 point underdogs, the odds were stacked against UBs defense. Despite giving an inspired performance, the offense wasn't able to keep up with Minnesota down the stretch, leading to the Bulls dropping 23-10 in their first game of the year.

Coming off a 1-0 win over Colorado College (2-1-1) that extended their unbeaten streak to three games, UB women’s soccer (2-1-1) put up a good fight but ultimately fell 2-1 against No. 17 ranked Michigan State (3-0-2) in East Lansing, Michigan. The result handed the Bulls their first loss of the season.
