I didn't dress up for UBCon - UB's own massive anime/gaming convention - this weekend. I didn't even know it was going on until I saw some Facebook statuses and tweets on Friday night. But when I strolled into the Student Union to get The Spectrum ready to print this rainy Sunday morning, there were dozens of people donning dozens of quirky costumes, consumed by character, galvanized for a day full of festivities.

On March 23, former UB Law Professor Jeffrey Malkan filed a civil rights lawsuit against Law School Dean Makau W. Mutua in the federal District Court of Buffalo. The suit alleges that two months after Mutua became dean in 2008, he illegally fired Malkan by violating Malkan's right to due process under the 14th Amendment and barring Malkan access to a mandatory faculty review procedure.

Today (Wednesday) marks the deadline for the UB chapter of the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship to submit an amended constitution to the UB Student Association, but the group won't yield to all the SA's stipulations, thus risking derecognition and a possible court battle.

The Student Association suspended the Intervarsity Christian Fellowship until further notice on Friday, and two days later, the SA Senate created an investigative committee to determine whether the club is in violation of the law and university policy by requiring its executive board members to sign a faith-based agreement.

Sophomore history and French major Steven Jackson resigned last month from his post as treasurer of the Intervarsity Christian Fellowship after feeling pressured to do so because he is gay, he told The Spectrum. The Fellowship may also be breaking the law, as its constitution requires its executive board members to sign a "basis of faith," a statement affirming certain Christian beliefs.

Circa, 1970. "Tears of Rage" seemed a suitable title to capture the emotions of the university, the city and the nation during a tumultuous spring 40 years ago. It also had the panache of words/music by Richard Manuel and Bob Dylan. War, military draft, poverty, ecologic ruin, racial strife, urban decline, public education, labor issues... Undoubtedly sophomoric (literally in my case), pen-to-paper (no word processing then) became an essential outlet to conceptualize the evolving turmoil beyond my role in production and artistry at The Spectrum.
