Story was a sexist rant

Letter to the Editor

Jennifer Brooks' article "Why are all the good ones gay?" (March 8) is a terrible example of women who claim to speak for all of us and are really just speaking for themselves. If you are having trouble finding a man to give you what you need in a relationship that is one thing. But to say that women want things only a gay man can offer is absurd. Perhaps you are just not looking at the right men.

Your article, while probably meant to be funny, is offensive and rude to women and men alike. You make broad generalizations based on stereotypes that do nothing to enable communication between the sexes. To suggest that women need to fine-tune a man to get what we desire is archaic. Haven't the women's movements taught you anything? Your article paints women as complainers who want nothing but to be waited on hand and foot and pampered. Some of us, while wanting these things, also enjoy sex as much as any man.

The idea that gay men are a "conspiracy against all women" is absolutely ridiculous.

The gay men that you represent in your article are only one of many different types of homosexual life styles. Your article simultaneously contributes to the myth of the perfect gay man and the myth that women are demanding, needy and hard to please.

"As utopian as this may sound to straight men, women want a man to listen when they speak, to spend time with them when they feel alone, and not just for the sexual privileges that relationships carry with them." Banter like this merely contributes to the sex wars that wage between men and women and further our inability to find comfort in each other. Men do exist who are willing do all of the things you outline and more, but perhaps the bar on a Friday night is not a good place to find one.

Please, next time think before publishing a rant on the front page.
