Though many Christian rock bands haven't been known as the hippest kids on the block, Skillet still offers listeners plenty of sizzling songs to rock out with their new album "Comatose."
The powerful vocals ringing from the husband and wife duo John and Korey Cooper, the impressive guitar riffs by Ben Kasica and percussion by Lori Peters make for a solid release.
Despite the fact that the band has seen many changes since their arrival in the mid-90s, their latest effort boasts an experienced sound.
The first track, "Rebirthing," combines an orchestral background, heavy guitar, drums and pounding vocals reminiscent of Evanescence and Papa Roach.
Although the song entertains, listeners may criticize the band for sounding too much like the mainstream groups.
Skillet's songs are catchy and energetic and their lyrics stay faithful to their background. They make broad religious references without imposing an overwhelming message upon listeners.
"Whispers in the Dark" combines piano and keyboards with heavy drums and guitar.
"When darkness comes I'll light the night with stars/ Hear my whispers in the dark," sing the Coopers.
Skillet doesn't directly address the almighty, but for their faithful fans the meaning can easily be found.
"Looking for Angels" seems to be a song specifically for fans seeking religious comfort, while also addressing other themes with lyrics such as, "We're oppressed and impressed by the greedy/Whose hands squeeze the life out of the needy."
