Battle: NBA bound?

UB Bulls senior point guard Turner Battle has been named collegeinsider.com's Mid-American Conference Most Valuable Player. Though he is the first UB player ever to earn this distinction, this is not the official MAC award. The MAC will name its official MVP at the conclusion of the regular season this Saturday.

Battle has also been invited to play in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, which will be held April 6-9 in Portsmouth, Va. Two hundred NBA representatives representing all 30 NBA teams will attend the tournament.

Sixty-four college seniors were selected to play in this tournament from college basketball programs across America. The tournament will consist of eight teams with eight players each.

The PIT has produced over 1,000 NBA players since its inception.

Buffalo's finest

The University at Buffalo's athletes of the week for week are Dave Amaro and Jennefer Brankovsky.

Brankovsky, of the women's swimming and diving team won each event in which she competed in at last week's MAC women's swimming championships. She broke her own record to win the 200-yard breaststroke, she won the 400-yard individual medley for the second year in a row, and she was victorious in the 200-yard individual medley for the second time in three years.

In addition to winning those races, Brankovsky was named the MAC Swimmer of the Year and Outstanding Senior at the meet.

Amaro, of the baseball team, batted .615 in a three-game series against the Kentucky Wildcats. The catcher capped off a stellar weekend that included a grand slam and three doubles off of a duo of pitchers who are receiving attention from professional baseball teams. Amaro also scored seven runs in the three weekend games.
