Record breaking

Sophomore Andreea Novaceanu of the women's tennis team broke her own single-season victories record, recording her 20th and 21st wins last weekend. Novaceanu's 21 victories break her previous record of 19, which she set during her 2004-05 freshman campaign. Novaceanu has compiled a two-year record of 40-10.

Novaceanu was also named UB Female Athlete of the Week.

Thrower on a 'Roel'

In a week full of broken records, sophomore Vanessa Roelofsen of the outdoor track and field team, broke her own school record in the javelin throw. Roelofsen's throw of 162 feet, 2 inches cleared her old record by five inches, which she set in her first collegiate throw.

Roelofsen's record-breaking toss also improved her qualifying throw for the NCAA East Regionals.

Despite setting a new school mark, Roelofsen managed only a second-place finish in the competition.

Straight Sets

The tennis teams took the athletes of the week awards 2-love, as junior Mike Rockman, of the men's tennis team, joined sophomore Andreea Novaceanu, of the women's tennis team, as male and female UB athletes of the week.

Rockman, whose 62 career wins currently put him third on Buffalo's Division I- era wins list, defeated Manhattan's Zolton Bus in straight set's 7-5, 6-4. Rockman outlasted Bus in a marathon match that lasted more than two hours. This was Rockman's team-leading 15th singles victory of the season.
