I'm writing in response to Devon Deicco's recent letter to the editor titled, "Spectrum should apologize, editors should be elected" (Jan. 26). I have just one question for Mr. Deicco, since when does the free press "represent" anyone? The Spectrum does not and should not "represent" the student body it should only report on it, inform it and give it the truth. The idea of electing a governing body of a newspaper is ridiculous and entirely contrary to the idea of the free press. A newspaper should be unfettered to make criticisms of society and government without any political consequences. The Spectrum's criticism of Hassan Shibly is an example of that, because as Mr. Deicco's points out, Mr. Shibly is a member of the Student Association. Agree with the criticism or disagree with it, it doesn't really matter. A paper's job is to bring issues it sees to light and just because you don't like the issue or the paper's opinion of it, it doesn't mean you throw out the system. Would you suggest the editorial board of The New York Times be elected for criticizing the Bush administration?
