Back in the top 20

Moving up one spot in the NSCAA/adidas polls, the UB men's soccer team's is back to number 20 in the country, after its two most recent Mid-American Conference wins.

The Bulls look to solidify a top-two spot in the MAC this weekend as they head to Western Michigan (6-6-1, 2-1 MAC) on Friday and Northern Illinois (9-3-2, 2-0 MAC) on Sunday. A win over both teams will secure the Bulls a number-two ranking behind the Akron Zips (12-0-1, 3-0 MAC). The Zips will also play two MAC games this weekend as they face NIU on Friday and WMU on Sunday. Two Zips losses coupled with two UB wins would propel the Bulls into a first-place conference finish at the end of regular season play.

Sophomore Lee Catchpole, the Bulls' leading scorer, is still awaiting medical results after suffering a head injury last Friday. A team representative said Thursday that it is unlikely that Catchpole will compete in either game this weekend.

Players of the week

Braden Byler of the men's soccer team and Lauren Burd of the volleyball team were named UB's players of the week. Byler came off the bench last Friday, to replace an injured Lee Catchpole and tallied two goals to lead the Bulls in their 4-0 win over Bowling Green.

Last week Burd averaged a team-high 2.7 kills per game over the course of three matches. Burd had a team-high 10 kills in UB's match against Syracuse and 13 kills against Kent State.

UB to host outdoor conference

UB will host the 19th annual Conference on Outdoor Recreation and Education. The event will be held on Oct. 27-29 and is expected to draw hundreds of students, professionals and vendors. The event will include general education sessions, indoor and outdoor activities and round-table activities. The conference will also utilize many off-campus resources such as nearby lakes, walking trails and ropes courses.

Registration for the conference runs through Oct. 22 and can be done at www.aore.org.
