Police are investigating an incident where a cyclist was struck by a pickup truck during a Black Lives Matter protest in Buffalo’s Niagara Square Wednesday night.
The victim, later identified as 59-year-old Karen Huffman, suffered broken bones but is in stable condition. The driver, who has not been identified, is cooperating with police.
Police have not yet determined whether the incident was accidental or premeditated.
A video taken by WGRZ shows protesters chasing the pickup truck as it drives off while other individuals tend to the injured biker.
Niagara Square is the same location where 75-year-old Martin Gugino suffered a brain injury after police officers wearing riot gear shoved him during a BLM protest in June.
Nationwide protests were reignited following a Kentucky grand jury’s decision to indict only one of three police officers involved in the death of Breonna Taylor in Louisville. The indicted officer was charged with three counts of first degree wanton endangerment, meaning the jury charged the officer for firing shots into Taylor’sapartment, but did not charge him for directly causing Taylor’s death.
Following the innocent verdict, protestors are now calling for the Kentucky attorney general to release evidence linked to Taylor’s case and the grand jury file.
A march is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at Niagara Square.
