Gov. Cuomo sponsors UB researcher

$359,000 grant going toward breast cancer research

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced roughly $3 million in grants to go toward breast cancer research on Wednesday. Cuomo’s “Get Screened, No Excuses” initiative awarded Professor Jo Freudenheim with $359,024 for her work.

Freudenheim is the chair of the epidemiology department and environmental health in UB’s School of Public Health and Health Professionals. Freudenheim is working in conjunction with four other professionals throughout the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and is one of seven researchers awarded funding from Peter T. Rowley Breast Cancer Scientific Research Projects.

Breast cancer is the second-leading cause of death among women in New York State, according to Cuomo’s press release. With the grant, Freudenheim’s research will be able to examine the role of the microbiome in breast cancer.
